I purchased a Dodge Red Ram hemi as a 315
It has BT344 stamped on top of block in front of the valley cover.
I understood it should have D632 for 2 barrel 315.
    Can anyone please explain?
    Thanks JCB

I am looking in Leo Lindquist’s Bible of MOPAR Hemi/Poly engines and cannot find your specific code. The closest code is VT344 and that is listed as a either a 241 Hemi or 259 Poly. The vast majority of truck engine codes begin with VT .....there are no BT prefixes in the truck codes shown. I am going to post a pic of that page here in a few minutes.

    Hope this helps.....

As shown in the book, MaMopar used the same ID code for more than one application so the only way to be sure is to measure the bore before ordering parts.

Thanks for the info. Appreciate your effort. I guess the only way is pull the pan and check.
All very confusing. When I pull the pan, i will report back. Regards JCB

Does the engine have side mounts? only tall decks had them with exception of 270 1956 poly. Another point low deck motors did not have harmonic balancers except for some trucks.

  8. One - it shouldn't say Red Ram or Super Red Ram on the valve covers if it is a 315 block. Show a picture of the # above the water pump on the drivers side. Sounds like you have a truck motor and not sure what pulling the pan will help. Pictures help us.......

Does that "R" stamped in front of the number mean "Replacement"?

    Thanks guys
So I believe the consensus is that it is a 315.
I can now look into adapting it to my Lasalle trans.
    Cheers

Pull the pan and measure a rod journal.
    241-270 1.937
    315 2.25
    End of mystery.
All Hemi's- poly's except the 51- 53 extended bell engine use the same adapter.

Because of the difference in deck height the tall deck intake is wider the center to center of the front two bolt holes on a low deck is 8 1/2 inches a tall deck will be wider I don't have one to measure right now.

Thanks. mine is approx 10, so obviously the high deck.
    Simple answer, Appreciate.

  21. Looks like dimple valve covers and a truck water pump....good score if it's a 315.

I'm a little late to the conversation about your engine size. For what it's worth, my 270 does NOT have side motor mounts.

Side mounts 270s were 1956 and I think they were only polys.
