Has anyone ever heard of a Dana 25 in a 50 mercury? I'm told that's what's in mine. Everything I'll seen says those are in the front end of jeeps, IH's, never hear of them being used in a merc. I was worried I had a Dana 41 instead of a 44. Now if I have some off the wall 25, I will surly have to go the 9" or 8.8. Seems the drive shaft guy says the stock u joints won't hold with my 351. What do you use with a stock dana rear end.? That is if you had one.

How reliable is your source? Perhaps your guy is saying it looks like a 25.

I'm gonna crawl under it tomorrow and find out for myself. He wouldn't know a Dana 25 from a 41 or a 44. He's a good mechanic just young. And never dealt with a car this old.

As far as I know, the 25 was only used in the front of 4X4 vehicles (Jeeps, Scouts, etc). Most Ford cars and light trucks of the late 40's and early 50's came with Dana 41's. Ford upgraded to the Dana 44 in 1959. The 41 was the precursor to and is very similar to the 44, except that the ring gear has a slightly smaller diameter, making it difficult to find aftermarket gear sets.

FoMoCo used the Dana/Spicer 41 in the 48/49 F1s and 49 Mercury cars. The Dana 44 came in in 1950 for F1s & Mercs but there may have been some hold overs in the early 1950 time frame. The rear end cover shape is different and the 44 axles have the raised casting mark on the lower right axle housing boss just below the bulls eye there as in the photo in the link posted. The 41 housing cover is more dome & circular shaped than the 44.

Well I don't seem to have a Dana 25, 41 or 44 in my car. I have pictures of the rear end but can't get them to load up. The rear cover is round and on the "web" where it should have a 41 0r 44 it has an 2 then below that it has S A or S H a space then 4025. I'm just lost as to what this thing is. Any ideas.
I'm going with a 9" or 8.8 later but sure would like to know what this damn thing is.

  8. I have a 44 in my 1951 mercury M1. I missed the part why you're changing out your mystery rear end. Why don't you figure out how to post a few pictures, so we can id that bad boy.

Chopped51 I planed to change gears ratios and use the 44 but it doesn't seem to be anything anyone has seen in a mercury. As for the pictures I'm working on that.
Thanks for the reply, at least someone saw this mess.

Solved my rear end problems today went to pick a part and got a rear end out of a 1998 8.8 explorer. The tag said 3L7388 8G30 so I guess it's a limited slip 3.73. Even has disc brakes, course the rotors are toast.
