my 65 riviera has several leaks. (st400) I am getting a tranny leak out of the speedo cable where it mounts to the transmission. I was told an oring, but as I look at the manuals...the only oring I see is on the outside of the speedometer unit. I would have to remove a half inch bolt then spin out the speedo unit.

Yet it doesnt seem to leak out there...it leaks from the cable. Is their an oring that goes in between the speedo cable and the mount?

This thing is really flowin....thanks so much for any advice you can give me.

not sure if you have this style or not-you may need the orange seal the speedo gear rides on

Boy that looks like it. thanks. because the tranny sits in there so high I cant see. May have to lowere the rear mount to get in there. I wonder if those are replacable or you have to get the whole unit.

yes, there is an o-ring there as well as around the drive itself.

Most real transmission shops can you help with that...

  6. Just replaced the o-ring on the ST-300 in my 64 GTO. There is an o-ring on the cable.... I think it was a 5/8". I had the same leak as you describe and when I pulled the cable off the drive, there was no o-ring. When you pull the cable off, you'll see where it goes.

    Good luck.

I had to replace both that piece and the gear on mine as the shaft on the gear was worn and the inside of that piece was worn. Not real spendy and pretty simple to do.

So...I pulled the speedo bullet out. The shaft on the speedometer was worn down allowing a leak. Replaced the seal and the number 40 speedometer gear. Think that took care of that.

Went to my local transmission guy (purchased a couple of trannys from him in the past) and he just gave me the parts. Super cool. Thank you AJ transmissions in mesa az.

Put the new steering box in filled it up with fluid and found a leak from one of the hoses I installed. Finagled a wrench in there and got it to tighten a bit more...hopefully that will be the end of the steering pump leak.

I am both excited and terrified to go look under the car this am....
