I am unsure but i believe it is at the Highway Patrol Musuem and children get thier pic taken in it. That was the game plan and those are the colors they spec'd.
    Thanks.

    Great thread!

One of the great thrills of being a father to my 9 month old boy is the anticipation of exposing him to automobiles, classic cars and hotrods in particular.

What would be more fun that having my toddler son with me at car shows and cruises. As he gets older he will obviously enjoy these functions more and get more out of them. I figure he might as well have a hot rod of his own so after shopping pedal cars and researching body styles I settled on this:

A 50 or 60's AMF 501 JetSweep in pretty good condition:

No major dents, some surface rust and a split in the seat pan but one that had very little use. 'Tire' rubber is good, bushings and linkages are like new.

So, what am I trying to do? Well, what would be cooler than having his own matching '69 Camaro' pedal car that matches ol Dad's ride?

Now obviously there will be some limitations but when I'm finished it will be clear what this is supposed to at least imitate AND it will fit in the trunk to take along with us to Camaro events too!

Here's what I'm going to do:

    1. Paint, Frost Green with Z/28 black stripes of course, proportionately painted to factory specs. Body, will cut the rear fender wells up as high as possible, seat pan will dictate this. Strip the body to bare metal, weld the split in the seat pan and get this as smooth as possible.

    2. Going do black centers and try to polish the wheels on the outer edges to match my wheels a bit unless I can find something better.

    3. Found a steering wheel that will be pretty close to my Rosewood wheel.

    4. I'm really thinking about taking some Autometer gauges photos and having them printed accordingly then simply apply as decals.

    5. Will build a seat bottom and back with Dark Green matching vinyl per my interior.

    6. Badging. Roger Nease at EmblemPros has been kind enough to offer to make me some mini Z28 and Camaro script badges once I get him some dimensions.

    7. Need to design and build a couple of matching chrome bumpers front and rear, cut the fender wells and go from there.

I haven't decided just yet on how to deal with the front grille, 'tail lights' and spoilers front/rear but I'm sure I'll come up with something even if we have to fab some up. Thinking about some lights too with a small battery mounted behind the seat area.

After reading this thread I'm thinking about making it a stroller car plus that will give me more latitude with wheels.

Time to share some images of a 1958 Edsel Youngstar made by Donalson MFG of N. Kansas City KS in 1958. This one is restored by a customer of mine with a few custom touches like the windshield frame. Obviously originals are very rare!

I make the steering wheel and taillight lenses.

A Garton "Hot Rod " I just completed last week. My buddy Steve shot the paint.
I'm pretty sure that's Bob K in the background.

Nice work and you got it done while your daughter is still young enough to enjoy it.
