I'm new to this bead rolling. I got mine to do floor panels; but the other day I tried to do some art stuff. Is there some instructcnals available some where? Or do I just keep practicing till I figure it out?

 

Jamey Jordan has a couple of DVDs out that are excellent beginning instruction. YouTube has some videos also but, nothing beats seat time with a beadroller.

Getting ready to beadroll a headliner for my sleeper for my COE . This was a sample of what will be in the center I did on a scrap of 18ga . The center will have a light the same size as the circle . The headliner will be done with 3003 Al. .063 h 14 .

 

Been cold in Texas , so I beadrolled a side panel for my welding cart and a seat front and back for a bucket I’m making for my stool .

 

Hey Guys, I know this isnt an artsy pic but can anyone tell me what the hell went wrong here ? I wanted to put a nice bell shaped flair on the end of this 4"aluminum tubing. I figured I would put the stop at the edge of the roller gently zip around with multiple passes increasing pressure and I was golden . Nope.... it distorted the tube. it's 16 ga so I know its thick. Why didn't this work ??

 

I don't know, but you do some nice work.

 

I think you were trying to get more than the die was designed for, for one thing. You, for sure, overtightened it. A spoiler die would maybe do this.

 

I used a spoiler die. As far as overtightening it, I would agree however because of material thickness, it was the only way to get it to move! I DID start gently and gradually tightened it. Probably, the answer lies in the thickness! Thanks for responding !

Holy crap!! Just found this thread and I am impressed to say the least. I need to make me a guide so I can do a straight line!

 

This is the first bomber seat I have ever made. I never did pleats before, never did solid rivets before either. I don't have a brake or a sheer. This is about as close to handmade as you can probably get. It's not done but it is for now.

Just purchased a bead roller from Baileigh. The sales rep told me that they do not supply offset bead rollers. Who supplies these for a 3/4 inch shaft bore. Eastwood has them but I see they only sell the 22mm offset die individually and the 3/4" bore roller sells in a set for like $400.?

 

Ive been looking at youtube and the hamb for ideas for my bead roller modification while working a night shift when I came across this thread, so friggen awesome, now I cannot wait to finish it - will post some build pics when done. Glen

This is the type of post us beginners need, pics of step by step, awesome thanks. Glen

 

I want reproduce the WO, Willys Overland logo. Having the original there next to me has made making this layout easier. I am also reducing the overall size and width of the letters by 10% to suit my tailgate.


The letters are not a round bead but a V shape. I achieved that by using my tipping die on the bottom rather than the round matching profile. It gave exactly what I was after. I started with the O first as the W ends up in the foreground if done after. Rather than stopping and starting, I thought it would be easier to get continuity if I ran around several times without stopping until I got the height needed. I shaped an old cold chisel to match the shape I wanted for the ends of the bends where the W passes through the O.


Used another flat faced punch to knock down the space in between the beads. Now as the W changes in width, I cannot use the same setup as the O. So I am following the outline of the W while pulling up with the sheet to create the fold. This is slow work that has to be accurate every single pass.


I then flipped over the sheet and pressed the tipping die into one of my old road racing roller skate wheels. It has a soft durometer to allow the metal to push into the middle of the letter. The process was repeated back and forth a dozen times. When I saw no more change in height of the W on the bead roller, I switched to stretching the metal by hand to get it up to the factory height. Just using the wedged end of a hammer as a chaser by moving it along the letter while hitting it with the brass mallet. I raided the recycled rubber paver from the cat run which worked great for this! Stretching the areas between the letters to flatten everything out was done directly on the bench without the mat.


Also planished it by having the letter over the edge of this stake and carefully hitting with a small hammer on the outside. The results of 3 afternoons work during our fifth lockdown was worth it. I learnt more of what can be accomplished with the tools I have. I think that it is a good facsimile of the factory pressing and I can go on with making the rest of the tailgate which will have a custom design to suit my build.


Finished and fitted to the custom bed which started as just flat sheets with everything hand formed. Even the top rolls are all one piece and part of the sides and not just tube welded to the ends. Same goes for the stake pockets etc.
