  1. Mel's Drive-In
    3355 Geary Blvd
    San Francisco, CA

It may not have the best burger in town, but Mel’s is an icon in San Francisco, first established in 1947, and featured in American Graffiti. The original location on Van Ness, which welcomed more than a hundred cars in its heyday, no longer exists. But the Geary location just brought back that classic car hop service, a response, to the COVID era.

Anton and Zahie Nijmeh first opened in 1966, starting with burgers, then slowly switching to falafel,
gently telling customers over and over, “try it, you’ll like it.” Fifty years later, it’s a falafel institution.

Pick's dates back to 1923, when it was a root beer “refresher” or roadside stand during Prohibition.
The original windows still latch up at the sides, to hand out burgers, dogs, shakes, and fries

Fellow Hot Rodder, Robert Jacobs opened the first "Bob's Giant Burgers" in 1962 in Fremont.
He later opened stores in Newark, Hayward, and two in Pleasanton owning 5 at one time.
I still frequent the Pleasanton store. Bob passed away in 2007 at the age of 82.

Annie's in Stony Point, NY. Originally opened by her dad Phil, Annie's was one of the fixtures in town. If you moved out of the traffic flow (lots of empty space to the rear and out of the picture on the right), you could park as long as you liked provided you were still buying the occasional drink or snack. It was a great place to meet up for whatever was next that evening. It's even possible that a street race or two might have been set up from that parking lot. This is not a current photo but it is one of the last photos. Annie's, as well as the Texaco station her father ran on this same parcel (out of picture to the left), was torn down to be replaced by a bank and a CVS.

The " Dairy Mart" in Huntley. IL , been there since 1955. But recently the State widened route 47 to make room for "growth" and they lost a lot of their front parking area. Dairy Mart - Huntley.JPG
