Funny you should post this... Lee Pratt brought me a roll of film that he shot at the first ever Paso show. I'm scanning the images now and will run a feature on them soon.

Paso was such a cool show, I bet I have 5,000 pictures from the 10 or so years I attended.

  6. I remember Larry Watson standing in the middle of the street with the video camera the size of a small cannon, I think I still have one of his videos. A&W had no parking for blocks.
Who stayed out at the Barracks cause there was no room at the Inn?

What struck me right away was all those folks, in their 35 - 40's are now 55 - 60 or older! :)

Wow we had some good times at Paso. Saw my bro cruise by in his 41 Hupp. The town is now in to wine taste n and bicycles.....What made it so cool in those early years was no hassles, the A&W and a lot of cool customs. We need a time machine!

  15. I only managed two trips there a few years before it moved down to Santa Maria, it was a total blast. Stayed at some camp grounds on the outskirts and slept in my daily driver since I had only started building my '31, all the rest of the guys had their hot rods and customs. Went with a few of the guys from Brizio Street Rods and Garage magazine (before it was bought out by a certain motorcycle builder) who I met while doing a short stint of part time work there, would never have heard about all of this if it wasn't for them. Damn that was already over 10 years ago!

First time I went I had to stay in San Luis Obispo the next few years we stayed at a new hotel, that while being built, we got on there list for a room. Paso was a real fun time, miss it a lot.

Wow! '95 was around my third time at Paso, and the video brought it right back! My not-yet-painted shoebox is visible in the cruise at 16:13 and again at 18:42. Lots of familiar cars and people. The sound FX are great: people's comments, engine noises, and music. I wish that show was still there, unchanged.

So much simpler and relaxed. It was a true Custom show then. Hardly a Hot Rod in there, even in the cruise.

I want to get in on the Camp Roberts housing. That looks pretty sweet. My father in law was stationed over there for a time around 1960 or so.

I was just in Paso last Thursday, and I got a big chuckle as I drove through town and spotted a billboard on the side of the highway listing a few outdoor concerts for their amphitheater. Remember that this "show" was essentially pushed out of town several years ago to accommodate the wine snobs. They must now be having a change of heart, as within in the past three weeks they hosted Judas Priest, Mastadon, Marilyn Manson, and the Deftones. I just can't see the Chardonnay crowd sipping wine and then jumping into the mosh pit ...
