Kinda like George Washington's axe. Handle and head replaced several times. This is truly something for someone with more money than brains. Will probably wind up as original numbers matching restoration. The story of how all the original pieces were stashed away and rediscovered by the new owner is yet to come. JMHO

Bruce it should be entertaining. I wonder about some of the stories about stuff stashed away myself although there have been a few stories with some factual basis to it. This car should be brought back to resemble once it once was, since the three 3 Lemans cars are important pieces in Corvette racing history without question. I believe there is a car that was recreated some time ago in the same livery that this car should have but the car was always known as a recreation. I am not sure there is enough to really restore the car although I believe a recreation is fine as well. Someone with deep pockets should buy this car and the recreation and put them together as one.

I will be watching to see what happens though. These cars are worth a whole pile of dough when completed.

A recreation is the best you could do with that pile. Buy a decent '60 driver with a solid body, swap out the steering column with the VIN tag, big brakes, fuel tank and anything else left of the original car. This way at least you have original GM fiberglass and something from the time period. Saying that , the whole thing is silly, I couldn't be bothered with it.

Here is a picture of the recreation I referenced that was in a museum some time ago. If your pockets are deep enough to buy the purple car above then this recreation and the original chassis may be a good marriage IMO. Although my interests admittedly lean towards the Corvette drag cars I also realize that the 1960 Corvette team was a pretty cool effort and they did bring back the first class win for Corvette at Lemans (with some real thanks to Briggs Cunningham). If there was one more race on my bucket list it would be Lemans. Just a cool race IMO.

Besides being stolen at one time, somebody commited a criminal offense to the body of that thing!!!
I vote it gets restored to whatever the later drag version was....that'd really drive 'em crazy.

You took the words right out of my mouth jp. Is that an AC compressor also. That whole car is truly classy right down to the 270HP style air cleaners.

Chris I thought that the Lemans car's latest look was the basic body it had when it drag raced. Not sure how anyone could believe that body style was better than the way the General made it.

As to the 348 car it is a great looking car. I always thought if I ran that body style at that height that I would go with the salt flat style wheels. They fit the car quite well IMO. Engine looks right at home in that engine compartment.

Dan Strohl has a very informative article for Hemmings on the Lemans Corvette. It is believed to be number 1 not 2 as I remembered.

IMG_2631.JPG several years ago I had the opportunity to drive the #3 Lemans Corvette
Through my neighborhood. Quite a thrill. My neighbors we quite used to seeing me drive Corvette race cars by their home, but I’m sure none of them had a clue of the history of this one.

The car looks good, but who's the ugly guy leaning on it?

Pretty cool Dave to be able to drive one of the cars. Just sitting behind the wheel of the Gulf Oil 1962 Corvette was a big deal to me. I remember looking over the steering wheel when Mike Ernst owned it and thought about all of the cool stuff that the drivers experienced behind the wheel at speed. Driving one is even better I am sure..

rudestude that picture of Shirley has made it on a few posts here on HAMB. Fonda and Lebanon Valley are in my area and there are quite a few pictures and stories about her.
