Features Corvette hot rods - picture thread

  1. We honored Scotty McLendon, at this Saturday’s Florida Dragstrip Riot 4, with this beautiful award. He was a force to be reckoned with back in the day. Was able to find a few minutes to chat with him. Very quiet and reserved man, but he told some awesome race stories. Blowing up Motors at the track, then working all night to swap out a new one and go on to win the championship

It is a 58 and with 2 days to run it is at $23,500, which I find to be pretty strong money. I see guys say that cars in better shape are not worth much more. Will be interesting to see what it goes for.

Is there a sun roof in that or are my eyes seeing things?

    Good eye!
Dunno, owner was crazy enough to do most anything! If it is a sunroof it's in a split window!

There are more than enough restomod builders these days. Full time. part time and hobbyist. A friend near you Jim spoke with a builder in Indiana in the last year who claimed to have 12 '63 coupe bodies waiting for buyers willing to pay him to restomod them. They'll build from just tags and title. They are quite willing to pay strong money for the body even if just a partial, with VIN and a clear title. Some years ago they went from resurrecting the deteriorated and neglected to denigrating "good" cars. On the up side parts they discard become available. There is quite a range in quality. These restomods have been around now long enough that some have become dated already. With technology continually changing and advancing so fast that trend will continue.

For all the restomods that have been built you don't see many being driven.

I'd rather see them light them on fire.

Dan, I agree there is quite the market in the restomod industry. I recently sold a 58 Vette project I had put together with the original thought of building a Charlie Wilson Vicious Vette tribute car. I finally figured out there is no way I can get all of my projects done so the 58 was the first to go down the road. It went to Southern California and the buyer told me he is going to resto mod it. Once it is sold it is their deal.

I am not a fan of restomods although I may not go quite as far as Doug's sentiments. You talk of some of the restomods becoming dated. I talked to a guy a few years ago that paid over 100k for a restomod at auction and then wanted it updated with the latest and greatest and he ended up with like 250k in the car I believe. The problem is that it will be "dated" within a few years and then what do you do?

My wife has hinted at a restomod but I enjoy driving the old stuff. My Fred Flintstone style Vettes takes me back in time and put a smile on my face nearly every time I climb behind the wheel. I have had people ask me to give them a ride occasionally and I remind them to expect a ride not too dissimilar to strapping two 2 x4 to their backside. Comfort is not in abundance IMO but I would have it no other way.

I have gotten in a few arguments with the restomod crowd but it is their car and their dollar so God love em.

I realize this one isn't a Hot Rod Corvette , but its driver jesters that even old rough Corvette's are still #1 ....or maybe his jester means "one day" it will be a Hot Rod Corvette... 16044017969641940884618339061253.jpeg

Your right it has disappeared. It is still on Barn Finds but the link to the eBay auction only yields a could not find it page. I saw the final selling price but short term memory is failing. Top bit was just short of $27 or $28,000.00.

While perusing corvettes on eBay (62's only) I came across a running older resto, non-matching # modified car for 45K or make offer. Pricey for me but If I sold all I have I would make an offer on that car. Compared to the 58 I think it's a better deal.

brigrat probably not, I'm way past getting any more cars, I can't finish what I have. It took me 6 hrs to get out the 8 bolts out of a OT GMC 8' pick up bed and I had a friend help for 3 of those hours.

I’ve always wondered what famous people do with their cool cars......probably the same as most they park it. IMG_3011.JPG

Then again I kept opening and closing the door looking at mine the other day. My wife thought this was odd!

I wasn’t around yet but I can only imagine what this would have looked like in 1962 when it first showed up. There was nothing else like it! IMG_3078.JPG
