They really were "the days". I was 21 when I had this, and between my friends they had a straight
    axled '57, a 427 powered '64 roadster, two '64 coupes, a '71, a '62 and a '61. One maniac had a '59
that he drove as if hellhounds were on his trail, the cops were on him mercilessly. Oh yeah, and
there was Willy, who took the injection unit off and (right before my eyes) dumped it in the trash
can. Yeah, you guessed it, he put on an Edelbrock and a Holley.

There was always talk about L88s but I never knew anybody that bought one.

The L-88 was a rare car with only 20 assembled vehicles for its first year (67), more in 68 and 69, few in the general public even knew of them, a lot of them ended up in the hands of racers, many with connections.
Not sure of replacement engine (short blocks) numbers or cost but I'm betting not a lot of them were built in the first few years.
Like anything Corvette related; the bench racers embellished their discussion on these engines, many so-called L-88's were actually lower hp versions, just cammed up.
I do know Chevy parts departments sold many many more L-88 camshafts than in assembled production engines for the three model years.

Removed the scoop from the hood, had a friend of mine close up the opening , and I cut and fit it this past Saturday. Nice to be able to see the road ahead and happy with the look. Corvette hood on 9 1 18 e.jpg

As to the 1967 L88 Vettes, I believe there may be more than were made at GM. Not so sure on the later L88s. The guys I raced with bought an over the counter L88 and raced it and I knew of a couple of L88s that were raced. Wish I had bought one. The only true L88 stuff I own is an early L88 cam in the box. I had been at a car show years ago and there was a Camaro race car that sounded unbelievable. I told the owner so and asked him which cam he had in the 427 and he told me it was an early L88 cam. I bought one within a couple of days. I always thought one day I would put it in a car but never did-maybe someday.

My '67 Camaro had an L-88 cam through most of the '70's long before I owned it. It's only a 396-325hp but it sure sounded good.

I ran that cam in a 1/2 dozen of my cars over the years. There were certainly other cams that would have made more power, but nothing sounded as good as the L88 cam.

I am really enjoying this thread!!!! Thanks to all that post!!

I finally dug up a picture of my 64 Corvette I bought back in 1974. I had a blast with that car every weekend during the summer. I lived in the Detroit area so Thursday night it was cruising to 12 mile and Orchard lake road to hang out in the parking lot of a restaurant called the golden nugget or blue flame or something like that. I don’t remember the restaurant for sure, but I remember the cars were fast and it was not uncommon to see Michigan license plates that said, “manufacturers plate” instead of “great lakes state”. Clearly a few guys who worked at GM, Ford or Chrysler hung out there. On Friday night and Saturday night it was off to Telegraph road for some stop light action. Our local area to race was Haggerty road at 6 mile. The quarter mile was painted on Haggerty. Then Sunday afternoon it was off to a local gymkhana parking lot race. A couple times a year we would hit a drag strip for fun. We called this car the Silver Bullitt, but later it was just the Bullitt. One of the previous owners worked at the GM tech center. Legend had it that the motor in this car was a “mule test motor” used by GM during development of the 1970 LT-1 motor. When I had it the car had the “140” service package cam. The car was really fast but I wanted a big block, so I bought a L-88 motor for it from my friend who had one of the original 1969 L-88’s. Life came (family) at me and I never installed the L-88. I never got to run the car with a big block. I have always been a little disappointed about that. But anyways that car sure was fun!!! Those were the good ole days for me!!

ramblin dan is that your Corvette? For a second I thought it was a picture of mine. Then I saw the cute girl and realized it couldn't be mine because no cute girls would ride with me!! Mine had the same grille with head lights behind it and the head light doors filled in. Mine still had the park lights though.
