A lot of these cars shown are of course Corvettes but are not gassers although are still nice to see. The Modified Sports class was always a favorite of mine.
It's a rad car. There are a couple neat stories in this FB thread I found when I looked up the car: https://www.facebook.com/groups/48949175881/?ref=share&mibextid=Na33Lf
Doug which car are you wondering whether it is an altered? The red Midwest car driven by Ed Laramie ran altered but he could have run in MSP as well. The Nickerson Standish car ran a Chrysler hemi with 25% setback which was allowed in MSP. The yellow 60 (post 3247) above is Marvin Sterling's Hot Canary that ran in MSP and won Indy in 66.
Jim, the Nickerson Standish car is the one I meant. I was young when they had real classes but that looks like an altered to me. Thanks for the clarification.
@jimdillon, Do you know what other cars Ed Laramie raced? I think there was a mid 50's Modified Production Pontiac and a couple more. I went to high school with his daughter. Should have pursued that. She was a looker, and with a racer dad, that would have been as they say, "Too Much!" Who else drove the Vette, and who all owned it?
Bruce, I am not sure what other cars Ed Laramie drove although for some reason I believe seeing him in a Mopar during the mid to late 60s (if my memory serves me). The Vette was owned by Ron Reader (owner of Midwest). I should ask him to clarify it sometime. Ron owned several Vettes including the blue 62 with 25% setback. This red Vette was different from Ron's black 57 that ran a Pontiac and then a 427BBC. This red Vette ran a stack injected 396 and ran in altered. Funny deal is that I have fond memories of the car. I really wanted a Vette (I was 17 at the time and my dad would not allow me to buy a Vette-I had the money but no permission until I turned 18-I had found a fawn beige 61 for sale for $600 but my dad nixed that sale so this was the second Vette I wanted). The guys I ran with raced a 427 in B/G in a 57 Vette and one Saturday in the summer of 1968 (I feel pretty sure of that date-I hope) we stopped by a cemetery on Woodward to go meet some guys associated with this red Vette, and look at the car I suppose. They had the car in a large toolshed/garage in the graveyard. I really wanted the car and dreamed that I could own it but it was not available at the time. I posted this on another site one time and a guy told me the name of the cemetery and that that car did race again. He told me Dwight and Larry Littleton had some association with the cemetery and bought and raced the car. Also uploading a picture of the Vette showing the engine/injection.
In the late 60's you could run early corvettes in "modified production" with stock type suspension, mostly stock bodied, not set back, no blowers, etc. Class was by weight to cubic inch ratio. A/mp through about E/mp. Not gas class obviously. There was a famous 54 with webered 6 cyl that E/MP that won nationally. "Pizza Man" Old timers probably remember it. Saw it several times locally. Post 3232 looks like a MP car
catdad 49. The black 57 was pure badass. If I had to pick one favorite that really impressed me that may be the car. In the 60s Vettes pulling the wheels was not as common an occurrence as later on but that car could pull the wheels and still take the win. I fondly remember standing along the fence at Milan and watch that car come out of the hole. Great car IMO.
From The Gathering at the ‘Roc. Fantastic specimen. Yeah, I know it’s a Modified Sport, but still cool as hell. lol
Trying to figure the green 58 car out. Modified Sports was written out of the NHRA rulebook at the end of the 1967 season, so it could not run in MSP in 69. With the straight axle it could not run in MP. Nor could it compete in sports. It could run in gas or altered. Would like to know the car # it ran at Indy in 69.
It is a bit of an enigma to be honest. Was not able to talk to the owner, so I have unanswered questions like you guys. I still like it though.
I like the car and would love to own it. I have a partial list of the cars that competed at Indy in 69. I am wondering if it is Richard Lasner from NY. It is listed as a 59 that ran in D/A along with several other Vettes. Lasner seems to ring a bell for whatever reason. Doug not sure what a 302/327 is but in altered it was not a main concern I suppose.
Jim, I remembered that you mentioned the black car, then when it popped up on my fbook feed, I had to share it!
I have this '64 Corvette currently for sale, Hoping someone could get it back to its former glory, It is in the H.A.M.B. Classifieds
I’m guessing that by 302-327 they are saying that during part of its racing history it had a Chevy 302 and part of the time it had a 327. The 302 Chevy was from 67-69 but people made their own version before that and they were often called a 301 but I have also heard them called a 302.
