Wow hell of a story. I'm pretty sure I have posted the Vette and or the 55 in various threads over the years.
Pretty good video on "The Pooch". Joel Miller is a good guy and has been an excellent caretaker of the car. I am glad he was the high bidder since he has since restored the car to all of its glory. Truth be told I bid on that car when it was on ebay and when it hit $15,000 I decided my cookie jar could not afford to keep going. It came up on ebay maybe one week after I bought my 61 Corvette drag car (chopped top car built by Larry Teter) off of ebay. The Pooch has been excellently restored. Thankfully there will be a few drag cars for future fans to enjoy. This car had a pretty good history for sure. It was hard enough to take a class win at the national level but he not only took class and street eliminator at the World Finals in 66 but he also won at Tulsa when he was invited to the inaugural in 1965 and raced in the Tulsa Invitational which was run simultaneously with the World Finals event. Cool car.
Jason one of the best. He not only won Indy three years in a row but in three classes (MSP, gas and altered). Pitted next to them once at Detroit Dragway and both Sam and his wife Heide were as nice as you could imagine. It seemed like he always won-guy knew his stuff.
@elgringo71 - That pic has so much in it! Injected '57 'Vette with Chrome roll bar & spindle mounts, spare slicks on the support truck rack, '66 El behind it has SS badge on the grill hence big block, orange flip nose Willys and possible Willys sedan to the right of the shot.
The SS option was just trim items, moldings, emblems and so on. No guarantee of big block. You could order the SS package with a six banger.
I wouldn't doubt that it had a big block though. Big blocks were popular with some of the tow vehicles. I remember Dave Kanners had a Chevy station wagon (if my memory serves me a gold 67) and he had a big block with a four speed as his tow car, when he raced his Camaro in 72ish. Looked to be factory and I thought it was strange but cool.
I'll readily admit when I'm wrong. But I'm not wrong about this. Sure, 64 & 65 it was emblems and trim. 1966 Chevelles and El Caminos SS396 was an option that stood alone, in U.S. Production. Some Canadian cars were SS Malibus. The El in the photo appears to have the big block hood. The pic was probably taken in the U.S. Don't take my word for it, look it up. Jeez, I was just commenting on the man's picture.
Jim I wish that I could find some video of that car running. It’s too bad that there aren’t many videos of these cars racing. Chevy57dude yes there is definitely some eye candy in that picture. Even the double cab hauler is cool
Big Block hood you say? Now in support of chevy57dude. Chevrolet literature for 1966-7 lists the SS396 Chevelles. It is clear for Chevelle that the SS396 is one single option and go hand in hand. Within that SS396 was horse power selection. The literature is not so clear for Elco's but seems reasonable that it could be the same. I am aware of later models Chevelles that were ordered with high horse big blocks and no SS trim or stripes. Intention was not to attract attention. I'm going to dig further for '66-7 Elco. I have seen at least 1 '66 or '67 Chevelle equiped with a six cylinder and SS trim package. The car was unmolested and believed to be as Chevrolet built it. I wonder if the Elco in this photo had some day two features.
Yes look at the black mark to the right of the driver's side wiper. This is a corvette thread, sorry to derail it. I stand by my original statement.
It is hard to clearly make out the fender flags. But they just may be 396 emblems. I can not detect at all 396 under the SS grill emblem. I am leaning towards retracting some of my first comments.
This discussion opened my eyes to the Canadian side. Acadians, Beaumont models I have heard of. Always glad to learn something new, did not know in Canada a Malibu SS was still carried over in 66.
Agree you should stand by your position. Also apologies for hi jacking the thread. But I'm not ready to concede the hood. That black mark isn't definitive and appears too far back close to the windshield with nothing corresponding on the right side of the hood. Unfortunately the roll bar isn't helping us. I'm going to cut my comments off here.
