quick google shows Summit has a 18 v. 1/2" 300 ft./lbs impact for $150 (with no battery or charger) but I have other Dewalts so that isn't an issue... Seems like a no-brainer compared to Snap-On prices... On a seperate note I have had great luck with factory recontitioned Makita and Dewalt tools...

Uh, yeah... that's the one... Of course I DID buy two because nothing sucks worse than when a cheap tool breaks!
For about 15 years I have used several of the 9.6 v Snap on 3/8 drive impact guns. The guns lasted awhile but the batteries suck. Then they went to the 12v batteries, then the last couple years I have used the 14.4 batteries in the 9.6 guns. Two months ago I got tired of all the battery issues and got the new 14.4 with 2 new batteries and a flashlight, gun is till 3/8 drive. I like these because they are fairly small and lightweight. Then shortly after I got the 1/2 drive screwgun by snap on, gun only that matches my batteries. It was 325 bucks. It has probably been in my hand less than 12 times and the automatic brake failled. It is is for replacement. Generally this is not the case with their products. On the other hand, I have the full slew of 18v dewalt stuff for my house, and it couldn't be better. I have two of the ni cad batteries and two of the lithium ion. The only reason I went snap on for my shop is the impact gun is 3/8 and the dewalt impact gun, from what I have, is a 1/4 collar that you slip in a shaft with the capabilities to hold a socket. I don't prefer that. The little 7.2 v palm screw guns, also available in impact, are the handiest though.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news then. I was hoping to buy one myself if they would have been half way decent. Hopefully you'll be one of the lucky ones.
sorry to say, but the makitta is so lite the litest out there i'm a union glazier i use it all the time 18 volt lithium. batterys last very long and re-charge very quick. i love it. and has a light too. go to h/depot pick one up and then pick up a dewalt you'll see wich one you would rather work with JAN and i use it on my av8, willys, and henry j.
a lot of those tools you can disassemble the battery packs and get new cells cheap from "that auction site", basic soldering and you are have basically a new pack, most of the internal cells in the packs are pretty generic
A co-worker of mine found a place in Houston that sell the internal batteries and re-builds them himself. He said they out perform the Milwaukee batteries by leaps and bounds, I just haven't had time to mess with them, too many other projects. LOL
I have two Snap On 14.4 cordless impacts (3/8 and 1/2) and really like them,the 1/2 impact I bought used about 8 years ago is going to need new batteries which are not cheap (over 100) from Snap On but I called Batteries plus and can be rebuilt for 40 dollars each. They are powerfull but still run into bolts thyat need to be broken loose with a long breaker bar before using the impact.
do they still make them here? I was looking at some at Home Depot and the boxes said assembled here from imported parts, or something to that extent, others of their tools said made in china
SNAP-ON is the best you can get. Once you try one you will not go back. Most guys will sell you a 3/8 impact, 2 batteries, charger, and a drill for $500 or just under.
Snap On 1/2" 18v.One of the most powerfull 1/2" impact I have used.If it won't undo it breaks ! Makes work so much easier,no airline to run,handy and quik. Yes expensive but well worth it. Use it every day .
