Features Coolvairs Lets See Them

  1. I have been trying to find a convertible project for quite awhile. Had to be 65 or older, be complete, and not be a total rust bucket. Considered several here on the HAMB and a few via Craigslist. Then I recently saw that episode of Wheeler Dealers they did the Corvair convertible. Always thought those cars were super ugly, but when it was finished I thought it looked pretty decent.

So I hopped on the local Craigslist and started looking. Decided on a 65 Monza convertible. Pretty cheap, Arizona car, came with an extra engine .. no brainer. Its going to have to sit for awhile until I unload a bunch of my other projects. Want to end up with one of my 67-72 Chevy trucks and this Vair.

Not positive on build style, either black on black, with black steel wheels and some sort of moon cap. Or red with white top and white interior. Chrome reverse style wheels and piner whites.

I picked up my first Corvair this weekend. 1962 with a 4 speed and a newer 110hp motor. What a sweet little car, I love it.

  5. Congratulations on your first Corvair. Best undervalued car on the market. I often hear people say that they wished they hadn't sold thiers.

    Congratulations DRUGASM!
The car my dad regretted selling the most was a red '62 Spyder convertible with the chrome Kelsey-Hayes knock-off wire wheels.

Love Corvairs. What is it about them that makes them so cool? They look nice and sporty, at least the coupes. Or is it the unique power train? The hop up capabilities? Inexpensive?

Nice car Drugasm. It's funny, once you get one, you wonder why you didn't get one sooner. We love ours. I really should keep the car cover on it when we aren't driving it but I like looking at it while I'm out in the shop.
I recently sold my Willys pickup (avatar) so I'm going to get the Corvair interior freshened up and rebuild the turbo I picked up a while back - see if I can't put a little more power behind the pedal.

Like you guys have all said before me, I don't know why I didn't do this year's ago. For the price point/buy in its perfect.

Quick question to the Corvair crew.... looking to replace the 13inch tires with a pinner/skinny style white wall. Found a few but what are yous running?

  14. Now you need your Clark's Corvair or Corvair Underground Catalog. Thanks for including pictures of the family. Easy to see they love it!

This weekend I am entering the Corvair in a local car show called The East Coast Nationals. It won't win anything but it will be fun to show off all the hard work.........anyway...........A friend of mine does some pretty outrageous bead rolling and offered to do some " performance " looking door panels and quarter panels for the car. The interior was pretty nice but was all wrong for the V8 version of the car. I went to my friends house tonight and picked up my new panels. I can hardly wait to put them in tomorrow but had to show them off.

I had to change the radiator from midship to the front of the car. That meant the engine compartment also had to change. After I got out the old air duct, I decided that I would try some more Lexan.........as of this afternoon. The top is just set in place which is why it doesn't look sealed...........I'm pretty damn happy with this look

  29. I picked up a 62 quite awhile back. Daily driver for a few years. Pic in front of the flag was at the local show and pretty much stock.
I had to see if a CT70 would fit in the back seat, it does, but it is not what I would call easy to do. Also my old copilot, he loved the car, wore off the paint on the pass door.
Wife told me we were having a kid, so I figured she had to come home in a cool car and the corvair got nominated. It was the coldest day of the year last Feb so the little one is covered up. I finally swapped the wheels on it. I have had them for years and this was the excuse to put them on. It took alot more than I expected to get a car seat mounted properly but it worked.

I am not at all surprised that you got a CT 70 in that back of an early coupe!

I drove a 67 coupe for several years and a coworker and I would spend a lot of Friday lunch hours garage sale chasing. One Friday we come across this sale, and the crusty old guy has this giant pile of 47-55 1st Chevy truck parts... grilles, grille guards, bunch of interior parts, chrome window surrounds, and just misc smalls/tons of etc. It was easily a pickup load of stuff. He was at $200 for the pile. I wanted some of it and was trying to negotiate for parts and pieces and he finally grinned and said "I'll take $50 if you can get it all in that Corvair and drive off". Challenge accepted!

We spent 20 minutes playing Jenga with that assortment of stuff between the trunk, the back seat, the wheel wells in the engine compartment, etc. and managed to get it all in the car without any in the front passenger compartment. We had drawn a crowd before it was done.:D

First day of the fall swap meet at the fairgrounds I did $300 on the first grille guard. Before it was over I was over $750 for the haul. IT was well worth the $50.:)
