Coolant overflow bottles

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by LeadFooted, Jul 12, 2006.

  1. Hey Guys,
I've been needing a overflow bottle for the '62 for some time now, and today I used a old Coca Cola bottle I had collecting dust, and used it.:D
    Here's a pic. :)

I was wanting to use a beer bottle, but all I had was coke. I usually drink at the pub or bar. ;)
What did you guys use on your rides? :)

  2. So when Da'Man pulls me over an I won't be charged with an open container, I use an old plastic gatorade bottle or a plastic oil bottle.

The cute thing is the old WWII aluminum canteens.

seems to me we used to just let the ruty water run out on the ground, and maybe we'd refill the radiator once a week (or more often if the leaks were pretty bad). what's up with having a "coolant overflow bottle"?

although I did used to have a pepsi can under the overflow tube in the pickup, when I was drag racing it every week

Mine's a 40mm shell casing dated 1944. I soldered in a brass freeze plug, and put a hard line in it that connects with a hose to the radiator, and a vent hole. Don't have any pics on my computer.

I'm using a clear plastic Limeade bottle myself. So cutting edge! My old "jegs" one was plugged up. It seems to have dropped temps about 5-10 degrees. How does that stay cool with the fan so far away from the radiator?? My fan is 3" away, I can barely keep the car under 200 degrees, that's with a new radiator.

I have a cool old Tiger Head Ale beer can that I'm going to use some day. I guess it was a regional brew........anyone ever heard of it?

  20. Damn dude you could fit another engine between your fan and your radiator. :D

Yeah mine just runs to the ground but one of these days if I find something that looks kinda cool I'll use it instead.

I'll find a good picture of our vodka bottle overflow tanks. I forget the name of the vodka but the container is over 16oz. and it's made of spun aluminum.....really makes a nifty overflow.

  23. Yeah, once the radiator pukes itself down to the level it wants....:D

The glass bottles look cool, but glass under the hood is anathema to me.
Unless it's a glass float bowl ala 53 Ford one barrels.

I gotta give hot rod wille my vote for the best idea so far.

Dang . . . I knew I shouldn't have let the ol Plymouth oil filter can go.:(

wow!! that's a GREAT idea!!!it's another way to kinda dress up an engine to look older at a glance till you realize "hey, that's hooked up to the RADIATOR!!" that's awesome..i was kinda thinkin about gettin an oil filter like that but didnt know what i'd do with it since i'd rather run the spin on type and this is AWESOME!!!!THAT'S why i LOVE the HAMB! takin old stuff ya know and makin it new again!

The purpose of an overflow is to purge all the air out of the block. Each time the engin gets hot it pushes the water into the overflow. Since air is on the top of the radiator it pushes the air out as well. when the engine cools and creates a vacuum it sucks only water back into the radiator. A few hot and cool cycles on the motor and all the air is out of your cooling system. That's why the car will run 10 deg cooler.(not the extra quart of water)
The only way for this to happen is with the right type of radiator cap, and if the water feeds into the bottom of the overflow tank. Just sticking a hose in the top of a container will keep the street cleaner, but do nothing for additional cooling.
With one of these systems hooked up properly, you will actually get a degrease in temperature. You will notice the first two or three times you run the car, you will have to add water to the tank. This process starts over every time you take off the radiator cap. (you allow air back in)

After I read that Rolling Rock was bought out by Budweiser and will stop production at the end of August I changed my overflow bottle from a clear plastic bottle to a glass Rolling Rock beer bottle. R.I.P. Rolling Rock, the best bottom of the barrel beer ever.

My flathead never pukes, even on the hottest days, but I am using a polished stainless whiskey flask.....gets a lot of comments........and an old Marvel Mystery Oil can for a coil cover......

yeah, I know what they do, but I didn't think anyone used them until they started putting them on at the factory in the mid-late 60s. I guess this is another new "tradition"?
