Less fast food then and more physical labor to get everything done. Look at the 12 yr olds hefting newspapers. I pedaled a route 365, for years. Push mowers, etc. People mowed their own lawns and maintained their own homes and pools (if they were fortunate enough to have one). They didn't hire out all the physical tasks. Different society then as folks were more concerned/focused on their mannerisms and outward appearance (look at the line of dressed up people waiting for a show). Nowadays some people have no shame. Sloppy house clothes (flip flops and basketball shorts) worn to church or dinner. That 4 lane stretch of Interstate 5 near Downtown LA hasn't been upgraded. I wonder aloud everytime I sit in the bottleneck where 60 years of gas and tire tax went...
