Anyone have an idea on a cheap replacement for tack strips on a convertible top? I've looked at reproductions but they are very expensive.

    Thanks.

You can replace the cardboard tack strip by filling the grove with pink bondo, smooth off as lumps will show, then staple as normal.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm surprised to think the staples would penetrate the hardened bondo.

Also, how do you keep the bondo in place? The current strips are held in by rivets.

I just got about 4 feet of tacking strip from an auto upholstry shop. Guy just picked up a piece of trim he had on the floor and gave it to me. It comes in two widths, My old stuff was nailed in with spiral nails, pulled them and re used holes with sheet metal screws. The new stuff is a plastic material, so far it has taken upholstery tacks and staples. The shops buy it in 50 foot rolls, pretty sure they would sell it to you by the foot.

Using bondo, leave the rivets in, they stick up and hold the bondo. No problem shooting staples in with air stapler.
