Clearance between steering column tube and shaft?

I am putting a little tach on the column of a 1953 Plymouth, and I don't want to use a clamp to hold it, I would rather fasten it with two small sheet metal screws. Is there going to be enough clearance between the steering column tube and shaft to allow the screws to get enough "bite" to hold?
    Thanks,

Shouldn't be a problem. What kind of column?
In the past I have drilled holes in the column and welded in nuts, or used rivit nuts.

Remove the horn button/ring & you should see the actual shaft & attaching nut. Generally they are 5/8" Diam. & as said above, there's no problem.
