Howdy all. Tim here again. To pick the collective brain of the HAMB. So I think I narrowed down some things for my 32 5-window Poncho. As a refresher, I am using a 1948 Cadillac flathead with the stock hydro. I am going to be using 32 rails with a Model A front and rear crossmembers. Middle crossmember...probably 34 style. Drop axle and standard spring over setup.

I plan on copping the top 2 inches, and channelling the body over the frame. I also plan on using a Winters quick change. Through some digging from Bruce Lancaster, and the latest issue of Hot Rod Deluxe, we found a 1951 Hot Rod feature car that used the Caddy flathead and the stock hydro. So I know I can pretty well go with that. But the pics/details don't yield the rear end mounting.

Now, I'd like to see if some of you folks have pics of chopped and channelled coupes from say the early 50's, or cars that were done in a period-correct style. Also, I was thinking of different ways to locate rear since I will be going with open drive.

Thanks for any thougths and pics!

  7. Here's mine (circa 1957):

My father started building it in 1954 ... by 1955 he had channeled it (6" in front, 8+" in rear) ... and in 1957 he chopped 2½" out of the top!

Man, every time you post that car I nearly fall over. It absolutely perfect in that picture. Don't get me wrong, I love it as it evolved through the 60's and 70's but the way it is right there is stunning. Take notes everybody, that is how it was done and should be!

Thanks for sharing all those great pics! I gotta figure out how much I can channel this thing and have the grille shell look right on it. I don't see modifying the grill (38 Ford truck) for height, and it can't be higher than the cowl. I guess we'll find out in the mock up stages.
    Thanks

Built by Art Chrisman. Rear engined Bonneville car. Was painted broze w/Von Dutch stripping. Later turned into the "Dobie Gillis" car by Barris. Has since been restored by Art Chrisman back to its original appearance. was sold at the Joe Macphearson auction this summer for a large amount of money. I'm sure others can add more detail.

A 38 Ford truck grille is a bad one for a car like you describe. It will never be an asset to that style of car. Better to use and Edsel horse collar, probably be more complimentary than that horizontal barred goose-egg pickup grille.

Thanks,I didn't know if that was the same car ,the Dunkan lettering on the cowl led me to believe it might be something else.

1948 was the last year of the 346 caddy flathead, In 49' they went to the ohv engine
the 346 was bigger and weighed almost 900#, The length of that tranny is long. You almost want to run a short manual trans.

That nose was made from 2 40 DeLuxe hoods. The build is documented in an early issue of Hot Rod magazine.
