Projects Chevy Orange?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Firefighter1618, Mar 23, 2023.

  1. I have a small block Chevy 350. I am in the process of tearing it down then I want to rebuild it. I need to clean the block then paint it. I would like to brush the paint on. thinking of using Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer then the color. Does anyone know if Rustoleum Sunrise Red is close to Chevy Orange? Or does anyone know some good hardware store brushable paint to use? I have Allis Chalmers orange. Not sure if that is close to Chevy Orange.

    All help is greatly appreciated.

Not sure why you want to brush the paint on but no, Sunrise Red is not close to Chevy Orange.
If your motor is out - brush the primer on if you want, then just go to your local Advanced Auto Parts , Auto Zone or Oreilly's or NAPA and get 2-3 Spray cans of actual Chevy Orange engine paint and it will be Chevy Orange as you wanted.

Clink on the link above I took off the Advanced Auto Parts Website.

    I get the tractor paint....But ?
Why close, when you can get the right stuff in Spray ?
The only thing I can think of is the non movable engine stand is near the furnace or heater where you wouldn't want to have spray fumes in the air.

I used Por15's Chevy orange enamel on my off topic Chevelle. I brushed it on and it looks fantastic, flowed out perfectly, way better than any rattle can job

  10. I've done the same as Mark, I used POR 15 Thunderbird Red on the engine in my Ford and Chevy Orange on the inline in my Chevy. Brushes out nice and smooth and has a high solid count. Gives a real real nice finish that hold up excepionally well. Go for it, you dont need primer either. OH, I also used their manifold paint on my exhaust manifold and baked it in my gas grille ( DONT tell my wife) its been on for atleast 10 years now and still looks good.... Mitch

There's Chevrolet Orange-Red (what your can is) and Chevrolet Orange. Dupli-color makes both and they're different colours that often confuse people. The straight Chevrolet Orange is what most people are after. For us nostalgia guys, Orange-Red is more likely it.

    Orange-Red is darker.

but I’ll clean the block and heads as soon as they’re out of the machine shop and epoxy prime. Then build. Much easier to clean all the oil from assembly with the epoxy on it.
Then use automotive or industrial enamel with a hardener.

Up in Santa Clarita Ca. I gave a high schooler all the shift linkage so he could hook up his 3 on the tree on his 4 door hard top 57. He dropped in a 350 and painted like this.

This is the car the linkage came from after engine and trans swap.

  26. That one looks good! Is it actually satin?
So many of them just look cheap including the one on my stand! Typical "smaltz paint over everything including the bolts"

I convinced a white hat Dodge Boy racing buddy to change the color of his SBC from black to fast chevy orange before bolting it in his chevy gasser, so he painted it Hemi orange  and thought no one would notice :p
