I don't know about the boat motors but I read somewhere that all of the 153 blocks used in GM cars and vans had the same casting number. It is on the right rear by the big GM. 3788514

Also they are now called the VORTEC 3000 and have been efi port injected since around 2007, the ports are machined in the top of the intake ports pointing down at the valves-rather than being installed in the manifold.
The only thing common between the153 and Vortec 3000 is that they were both made by GM and they are both 4 cyl. The 153 is ohv and the Vortec is dohc

  5. Do you have any sites that show the VORTEC as a dohc, all I can find is conventional push rod?

I think that SoCal Speed Shop ran the DOHC version in several cars at Bonneville as part of a collaboration with GM

No problem. I was just told yesterday by a friend who ran into another friend that I have some more 153-181 stuff coming my way. Not sure what is there yet but if it's good stuff I let you know.

  12. here is a link to the factory description: http://www.gmpowertrain.com/2013_pdf/FHR_VertREV_30L_Indust_061313.pdf
it is a plain old pushrod engine...and looking down to the torque and HP curves answers the question I had about its general lack of power, there just isn't much. Not at rpm useable for driving on the street.

  13. Remember the first thing you need to do is replace the cam with one designed for the street. Next is carburetion. It should perform like a SBC with an adjustment for displacement.

Have any of you used a roller cam from a 151 Iron Duke in a 153 or 181?

Anyone know how much "lift" (camshaft) I can run using my stock valve springs , head etc. in my 153 Chev. engine? ....I'm thinking about a new cam for the engine going in my 25 Chev roadster ... wanting a choppy idle without a lot of power loss at low RPM .... has anyone found the right combo of duration and lift? ( I will be running 2 x1 carbs and a header ....all else basically stock) Thanks, Jim

Jim, Do you have a build thread? I'd like to see and follow your build. Mine is a '26 Chevy roadster. Here are 3 cam grinds that Steve Tanzi worked up for me before Erson moved back East. This was figured using big block roller rockers a 1.7 lift. I chose #3 and the final sheet shows a rocker ratio of 1.75. The springs are small block but I'm not sore which ones. The head work was done by Tom Lowe. 100_1910.jpg 100_1909.jpg 100_1908.jpg 100_2040.jpg

Thanks for your reply! ...Yes, maybe I will start a thread.
Interesting data on your cam shaft grinds. Being an old "small block Chevy guy",(worked 30 years at the small block plant!) the approx. 290 duration on both exhaust and intake and around .500 lift at the valve are what works in a small block for the combo of cool "choppy idle" and decent response at low RPM. Do you think Tim Lowe did special work on the heads to accommodate the .500 lift? ...(a small block will handle it with every thing stock) Thanks again for your all of your info it helps alot.... Have you fired up this engine yet? .... are your working on your 26 roadster?

My engine is still in pieces. I ran into a slight piston issue and it stalled me a years or so ago. East to fix but life gets in the way. Tom Lowe did a lot of work on the head but not in that area I don't think. It has 1.86" intakes and 1.60 exhausts. He installed lumps in the intake ports and removed the head bolt boss from the intake ports. These engines are 2/3 of a 230 six and use some of the same parts as small blocks.

I have 3 of these 153’s and have them all slated for future builds. I’ve always liked the Brian Bauer 29 Roadster with banger, it’s everywhere!!!
Also really like both of The Late Jim Ewing’s 28-29 A Roadsters with the Frontenac Valve Covers rolling on spokes and headlights with fluted lenses.
Then of course Jake’s Mail Truck when it had the banger in it. And so many others like Frank Mc Fadden’s A RPU.
All traditional builds, but extremely practical.
    I think I left one recent one out and that’s Lance Sorchik’s A-Bone P/U. That’s a darn nice build!!!!

Looking for informaton on 153s and finding them.
I have a C10 that had a 153.. but I'm met with a load of disbelief about it..
Any leads on a buildable 153?

  30. You should add your general location to your profile, and in this case the body of your post. You might give serious thought to a 181 cubic inch industrial version (that is what I have in my AVATAR).
