I scored this engine from my boss a few weeks back. He told me it came from a 58 Vette. I am trying to decode the numbers stamped on the pad in front of the passenger head to figure out what trans it came with. The block casting number is 3731548 and the pad numbers are F4I9GC. I used google and was able to determine that the F means Flint MI, and the 4 means it was made in April and the G means 283, but I am lost on the rest. Any help would be appreciated.
could it be F419GC? would mean 1957 from flint, april 19, 283 with Turboglide and 4BC so not 58 and not corvette
Squirrel is out having a blast at the Hamb Drags. Proofus, in the late 50's any 283 that didn't have a two barrel and two barrel heads got called a Corvette engine if it was in something That didn't come with a small block. On that engine the Cam, pistons heads and intake would determine if it was a genuine Corvette engine. There were 9168 Corvettes built in 1958 with probably half still existing so that gives you about 4500 chances of it being a Corvette engine. Here is a list of Corvette Engine codes provided by some Corvette guys. http://www.corvettecenterusa.com/Corvette Engine Codes.pdf From what I am reading GC reads out as a 57 283 with Four barrel and as the block you have does not have any side mount bolt holes on it that should be what it is. Not quite as good as a Vette engine but real interesting in the world of 283's.
It has Power Pack heads and flat top pistons if that helps any and the intake #3731398 when I ran it says corvette.
