chevy 235 question

can u exchange a head from a 1955-57 chevy 235 to a 1954 chevy?

Yes.

 

Any '53-'62 235 head will work.

 

didn't they change the water pump and/or thermostat housing around '55?

 

The water pumps are different between 54 and 55-62. The water pump bolts to the block, not the head.
