Cheap upholstery.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by rockabillybassman, Jun 14, 2012.

  1. Just thought I'd show my budget upholstery job. The idea is to show guys just getting in to rodding that you can do things on the cheap. The prices are all New Zealand dollars.... USA dollars are about 75% of NZ.
I found some spa pool lids (polystyrene and vinyl) being thrown out so cut the vinyl off them.... that made my headliner.
I got given two Morris Minor front seats for free.
I bought a Morris rear seat off a local auction site for $10.
I bought 2 yards of black electro-pleated vinyl from Gary's Upholstery in the US, which cost me around $135 with freight to NZ. (Cant buy this stuff in NZ)
I spent around $50 on miscellaneous bits like board, vinyl spray and glue etc, and $80 on carpet from an emporium.
It's not pretty but it serves the purpose. It makes the car quieter and smoother, and more comfortable.
Total was around NZ$270 which is about US$210.
By the way, the car is a 1928 AV8 that I've nearly finished after three years of scrounging and building.

Looking bloody cool Marty. Thought for a moment I was in Aussie, but ya gotta do what ya gotta. Really don't mind the cycle fenders myself. Interior looks like its been in there for years, superb. So now the A's done, what's next. Pete

  25. We're quite 'hands on' down here in the antipodes.....ask the girls..:p

Plus, there's so much red tape here that sometimes you just need a little contrast, y'know? :D

  26. That came out great! Good job!

Very nice interior! I'm glad to see people are still doing something classy, and not just ratty "patina" interior.
My interior is pretty plain black naugahyde, with smooth panels. I wanted it all finished, but not too fancy for my Austin gasser. My wife bought black naugahyde and headliner material at the local fabric store at a 40% off sale. Got a 4x8 sheet of masonite from Home Depot to cut out door panels, and covered them with naugahyde. Wife sewed the headliner from a butcher paper pattern I made by taping it to the bows. Seats are old low back Jeep seats.
I've got about $350 in the whole interior, including the purchase of the new Jeep seats. Not fancy, but finished looking.
