I know for many of us a cheap machine shop seems like an oxymoron, but does anyone out there know of a cheapish engine shop? Preferrably a fellow H.A.M.B.er or a family member thereof. Most importantly within driving distance of Rockford IL. Thanks a ton for any potential leads.

Depending on how far you want to drive, I had a guy down in my hometown do my engine work a few years ago and was really happy with him. He's in Princeton, which would probably be about 1.5 hours for you. His place is RPM machining or something like that, I think he was still open the last time I went past there. (815) 872-7767. Not a HAMBer but he's a small town machinist, he's done all of the work for my uncle's several original engine rebuilds over the past years. Good luck!

  3. ...check with Hopperstad Customs in Belevidere for some good advice...Kerry knows lots of good people.

  4. I think you mean "reasonably priced" engine shop. When you find one get to know the guys before they do any work for you, it's good to be friends with someone that is doing surgury on you motor.

  5. Might check with Sterling Engines Inc. (815) 874-4510. 4737 Colt Rd, Rockford, IL 6110. No personal experience, but I have heard good things about them.

I use John at APEX Engineering in Bensenville (Evergreen St).

It's a cramped and crowded 2 man shop, but he knows his stuff.

He does everything from aluminum sprint car engines to SCCA engines to welding up Escort cylinder heads to ricer Mitsu's or "reengineering" 50 year old DOHC Masarati engines for $3million dollar exotics.

He's usually got some really cool stuff laying around, & likes old British stuff.

I've had him do a Boss 302, several SBF & BBF, as well as some mundane valve jobs.

Prices are always reasonable, but don't be in a hurry
