Hope this isnt too O/T, really dont know where to ask

does anybody know how many boats Dean Moon had?

The reason i axe is a buddy of a buddy says he talked to someone that claims to have a 62 Mandella v-drive boat, that was owned by Dean Moon. From what i heard, it is fully equiped with some pretty old mooneyes stuff, set up for a small block chevy and has a wood deck thats been covered with something....not sure what. The guy who owns it claims he bought it in California off a transport truck heading north from Texas, to Oregon maybe around 2 years ago. It MAY be for sale and the buddy of a buddy is interested in buying it. Personally i doubt it.........but.....this dude often comes across killer scores......so who knows......he may be heading over to check it out soon regardless if its dean's or not......hope he gets pics.

I did a search and came up with the v-drive thread. Looks like Mark Moriarity owns a boat from Dean Moon.

  4. That boat was up here for years, owner of a car dealer had it. It was for sale (along with matching trailer) a couple years ago for 25K. Seemed like a steal of a deal to me, and yeas, was chalked full of vintage Moon equipment.

With all the machinery Dean Moon collected and built up in his lifetime, it seems very likely he could've had more than one boat.

But it also seems like most of the stuff he aquired, he kept until the end.

Obviously, you wouldn't want to pay a million bucks for it just off hearsay. If the boat has paperwork with Moon's name on it, great. If not, it might still be worth buying just on the basis of it being a cool old V-drive boat.

when I bought Moonshine it came with original registrations in Dean Moons name, also a ticket he got in 1971 for speeding in the Long Beach harbor. I didnt know of any other boats before it but you never know.

Just a note. This boat was highlighted in a hot rod magazine in the 60s. My dad was obsessed with it. He cut the pages out and kept them. It is a Joe Poty hull. Dad finally found a hull (owned by Joe's widow) and restored it to match the Dean Moon boat. I helped build the small block (4 Webers) and did the wiring. I have a picture somewhere that I will post. Painted to match the one above. Unfortunately, Dad feel ill in the 90s and lost the boat. Last time I saw it, it was in pieces in someone's yard. I lost Dad in 2014. OMG, he loved that boat.
RIP old man. Loved you. Dave

  17. I see this boat is up for sale.
    Anyone know more about it?

    Saw this

For Sale: Moonshine: 1964 Joe Poty wood-deck, flat-bottom originally owned by Dean Moon. Black rolled and pleated upholstery believed to be original with the exception of the butt of the front seat which looks to have been redone. 350 smallblock Chev, (orig 327 long block included) velvet drive trans and halibrand v-drive. Moon gauges, throttle pedal and fuel tanks. Boat runs and drives just as it should but it has been 3 years since it has been used and may require minor tinkering to run. There is some minor cracking in the yellow around the outer edge near the top but I believe the yellow paint to be original and it has gotten no worse in the almost 10 years that I've owned it. I want USD$35000 bucks for it and I am absolutely firm on the price. I have vintage registrations in Moons name and a speeding ticket he got in 1970 along with a copy of 1966 hot rod and 1968 moon catalog I will include with the sale My phone number is 612 202 1033. thanks, Mark Moriarity

  20. Have the Moonshine Boat in Texas. Completely original with even the original 327. Boat and trailer are a 9 out of 10. Planning a Full restoration as it has a few small stress cracks in the hull.

    Absolutely stunning piece of history.

A well-known Houston area hot rod hoodlum sold the boat to vrod64 in2016, shortly after he had acquired it from Moriarty.

In 1968 I purchased a Joe Poty ski boat that was an exact replica to Dean Moon's Joe Poty Ski Boat. Dean's boat was Yellow with a Black Stripe with Mahogney Deck & my boat was Red with a White Stripe. I also ran a 327 Chevy with all the same equipment that Dean had in his boat. Then I replaced the 327 Chevy with a 350 ci Chevy engine. I was the East Coast Distributor for Joe Poty's Ski Boats & I am also the inventor of the "King Shifter" for 3 speed transmissions, which incorporated a reversed K shift pattern with first to the Left & forward & second to the Right & back. Any questions about Dean's boat call Tom King 609 851-7473

I’ve seen this thread before and what always struck me as odd was the description of the valve covers in the Hot Rod magazine article. Described as highly polished “no name” Moon valve covers they sure look like six fin Cal Customs to me.
@Moriarity, you owned it so could you clear this up for me? Moon or Cal Custom valve covers?
