My '39 project came with a one piece fiberglass frontend that was a piece of crap. Extremely well built as far as it being hand laminated, and very heavy. But so poor fitting I couldn't find any way to save it. So I cut the hood off of it, and then cut the sides off the glass hood. I bought a pair of steel fenders, and made the glass hood a quick removable so I can run with or without the hood. Two hood pins in back, and two more hidden above the radiator on a bracket in front, and it's ready to pull.

  6. Who built that one. Really designed to suit someone's unique tastes. No my style for sure. Obviously a well built car though....

A rare "without a hood" photo by Don Hale

    Hello,
As immaculate at the build is, some cars just look better with a hood. It took Atts Ono several years to get his Willys build to where it was finished. Or as we drag racers or hot rodders usually say, “somewhat finished.” There are always things to be machined or added on to make it go faster and look better. After he helped us with our own 1940 Willys Coupe for the C/Gas Class, he went all out on his backyard build to do things right. (moving the Moon Tank out of the cab was the first thing, then placing it on machined mounts behind the grille)

This 1940 Willys was the epitome of a backyard home build with the quality built in as the worked progressed. Sometimes, something needed to be replaced or a company offered to add the new addition to the motor/chassis/running gear. Items to get that “little extra” horsepower to win the trophies against some of the best in the B/Gas class.

When there was a transition from one injection system to a newer one, the hood came off for some trial runs and tuning. Then the hole was cut into the hood for clearance and the finished product in 1965-66 came into play.

According to his brother, this was the version that was sold and went to a buyer from the Midwest back in 1971.

Where is this 1940 Willys Coupe, NOW???

My car gets driven a lot, so keeping the engine tidy is an endless task but it's something I enjoy doing. Even so it shows the miles in little ways that are unavoidable. I have a hood and side panels for it, but I've got to admit that I enjoy showing the engine if for no other reason than to prove that the miles on the odometer are real.

I like it better with no hood. Shows off the Wimbledon white firewall. Very nice.

looks better with top on, just nothing there to fill the engine bay in yours, that’s why the others get away with it, engine bay filled, ( almost overfilled in some cases with engine.........).

Good to know though, that you are not alone, - the guy in post 57 has the same problem............:(
