1-22-16 Snow.JPG 1-22-16 Snow #3.JPG I can say I am very very LUCKY man, and I figured out one thing do not take mother nature for granite, this happen 1-22-16 between 9:30 and 10:00 A.M. just so happen I was home and jumped into action and moved both cars, about 1 hour later I went to my shop to get some supports to hold it up until I could get it back up. While I in my shop my wife calls and says it went the rest of the way down.

That's a hell of a span for a carport. You are lucky.

  7. As an architectural draftsman, I can tell you that the roof was DEFINITELY overspanned.

I know you're mainly talking about the cars LOL but I'm also glad you and your family didn't get hurt while it was coming down, or if you made it back in time for the support and then came down.

  11. A bunch of comments about poor construction and I agree, that's a lot of distance between those posts. Depending on what part of S.C. he's from that might be the first good snow its ever seen. Just saying.....

  12. Yeah, I can just hear the awning/ carport salesperson now, " You'll never get enough snow here in S.C. for it to ever be a problem". Glad you saved the cars and your Family from any damage.

  13. Well ... at least now you can get the snow off.

  14. Sure was, lucky hot rodder!

I guess one should never take mother nature for GRANITE for sure. :D:D:D She will throw a big granite rock on you. :D:D
That carport looks like it was a poorly built home made job with not a clue in regard to engineering at all.
Things like snow load or material spans, little unimportant things like that.

Now you can file a insurance report and get a big check!!!. Looks like a heavy wet snow.Iam glad this was a lesson learned without being a real disaster.Maybe a bit of a peaked roof and more supports but you already know that now.Would have been a shame for either car.You will come out on top and just fine

Mother Nature is a bitch....She dropped a tree on my '51 Ford a few years back. But....I get a feeling she had nothing to do with this.

Looks like a zero snow load structure. Good thing you were on top of the situation as best you could.
Anyone with a Versatube should have a look at this one that is supposed to be snow rated. Only 2' if that of snow to crush it. Warranty not any stronger

That structure wouldn't even be to code in west Biafra,
    You know, south of Togoland..

I am going to take 100% of the blame for this fail but a good lesson learned I promise when it goes back up you can set the house on it.

  26. I was thinking that it was home built. At least it was not a costly mistake (injury or car damage). I'm betting the next one will be a lot better. Good luck to you, or should I say more luck to you.

WOW!! Close call, just think standing under there with that temporary support in your hands when it came down! Lucky to be quick enough to get the cars out! Lucky again not to be crushed trying to save it! Joe

Im sure you will build a better roof structure next time but the important thing is that the cars made a narrow escape . That was close!
