Ok, just got back from a swap meet and picked up this nice little 4000 RPM sun tach and was hoping to find what the heck transmitter it needs to work.

Plate on the back appears to say EB - W8?

Anyone ever deal with a similar one, or can offer any insight as to the "black magic" of Sun tach transmitters?

It will depend on what engine you are using, (4, 6, or 8 cylinder), 6 or 12 volt electrical, and what type of ignition, (points, magnito, etc.). Different transmitters are needed for different combinations. The Sun transmitters should show what they are for. For example a 12 volt, 8 cylinder engine with a mag.

Well, what would the plate on the back normally be saying then. Would it just be giving a prefix for transmitters to be used with?

The tag on the back of this unit states "Use with model EB (then what looks to be a W8) transmitter", and I was wondering if there was a specific requirement for certain tachs.

Would it be able to use any of the EB transmitters then?

Even if you find the right transmitter, you won't be able to find the right batteries for it. Why don't you just have the tach modified by someone like Williamsons to operate without the transmitter? I believe they charge about $180.
