I think they were produced in the '50s also. I have seen many that have the bolt holes not aligned top and bottom. The early chevy heads had a bolt pattern for the valve covers that placed the top two holes at a different spacing than the bottom two holes.

I saw two sets today - one with equally spaced holes and one with the staggered holes. The equal spaced ones were made in Japan and from the way the guy was talking the staggered ones were the Gardena version. When did Chevvy change the hole spacing? i thought it was early 60's.

It was a mid year change some time in '59.

First version: sand-cast, no name, seven fins
Second version: die-cast, "Gardena", six fins
Third version: die-cast, "Japan", six fins

They also made them with nine fins and flat tops, with and without breather and PCV provisions.
