The 4 speed lockout T handle stopped working in my '61 Galaxie bench seat handle. There is no resistance as the "T" on the handle as it slides up and down and of course I then can not get into reverse. Is this a big job to fix the cable? Or any recommendations for anyone that can fix it without months turnover?
I'm pretty sure the Ford uses the setup similar to Chevys' early factory Muncie shifter and the cables are available from many reproduction suppliers, should be replacements for Fords also, I'm not familiar with the Ford differences to give you direct service procedures. I found this online, I hope it will help. HRP The wire stretches or breaks, making the shiftier inoperative. You need a 1/16" diameter steel cable, an acetylene torch, and brazing rod. Braze or weld a small nut to the top end of the wire. Assemble the lever, and insert a bolt into the top of the lever to hold the wire in place on the T bar or ring. Duct tape the T bar to the lever to keep everything in the full down (normal) position. Slide the spring and lockout dog onto the lower end of the lever, and wire it into place with the bottom end slightly inside the lever (ideally, it will be exactly even when completed) Keep tension on the wire, with everything held in place. Using a very small torch tip, braze the wire in place in the dog. Trim the excess wire from the bottom of the dog. If you can do this, you'll save the $160 a new lever would cost you.
I'm not finding a kit, I found the same article that Danny did 1968 4 speed toploader: How To Fix Reverse Lockout? | Vintage Mustang Forums (vintage-mustang.com)
