Normally I would be in the DON'T channel it camp but I saw this today on another thread and now I'm not so sure. That thing looks mean, even with the skinny tires and wire wheels.
It always seems a shame to channel a '32 and lose the nice reveal line on the side of the frame rails (not to mention the comfort factor). I always thought a good channel would stop just above the reveal, like maybe a 3" channel.

Awesome score ! build it to suit your vision just like was done in the day. You may not remember me but we met at Irwindale a couple of years ago at the antique drags when you were running your A sedan and we were running the Willys PU. Your sedan was a pleasure to watch going down the track and was no slouch. I hope you plan to treat the 32 as a Hot Rod also . Sincerely Colin

The wife has been hearing me talk about this car for a long time and was great. Totally on board with my addiction.

  7. As Alchemy stated. The flip and dip way was how we channeled a 1932 Ford 5 window coupe in the early 1960's when I was in the Stockers car club in Glastonbury, Connecticut. It was an easy way to channel the body, but also left us the option of un-channeling it in the future.

DSCF0186.JPG Instructions from 1947 Ray Kunh's Automobile Racing Vol 6. Wonder if you could stuff a '32 frame in diagnally throug the deck lid opening with the bottom panel removed and save the cut lines. Bob

Alternately there is another '50's method "goosenecking" or "V-ing" this is taking pie cuts from the top of the frame at the firewall and under the frame before the front crossmember which drops the body leaving the subframe/floor alone...with a flat frame Z-ing the rear is also necessary but with a '32 probably switching to an A rear cross/spring will do depending on the amount of "sweep" at the front...

    ***** UPDATE******
I think I might have found the history on my car.
Can anyone get me in contact with Willie Wilde of Wilde’s custom shop ( Salinas CA) or his family.

  16. Salinas customizer, painter, & artist Rod Powell (@RodP on the H.A.M.B.) knows/knew Willie and the Wilde family … so he may have some contact info for you ... see this POST by Rod in @Rikster's 2008 "Willie Wilde Custom Cars" thread.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, Rod no longer frequents the H.A.M.B. ... but he does post on Facebook & Instagram.

The red on your sub rails looks to be the same red on the frame of this car. Any sign of color other than black on your frame? I could be wrong?

    ***UPDATE***
So this is what I am working on to figure out.
Saw a pic tire this 32. The article makes sense with my car. My previous owner said it was a “full fendered flat head car before”

I have noticed some similarities. Plus I’ve found both red and blue paint on my car.

The craftsmanship on my chop looks professional as done by Willie Wilde. Other places look amateur and probably done later.

Using the red picture as a reference, can you take a picture of your body at the exact same angle? They could be overlayed in the Photoshop thread to see if the heights and lines all line up correctly. It wouldn't be definitive, but it would be a step in the right direction, or maybe would eliminate it as a possibility. It's been done to help ID several historical cars in the past. They sure do look similar.

That really looks like it could be the car! Shaved door handles, too. I hope the connection gets made, that would be really awesome. That's a great looking deuce. Would like to see it in blue, hopefully that history can also be found. :)

I’ve reached out to Industrial Machine Shop in Salinas CA to help identify anyone who knew Dick Shannon. Unfortunately he has passed away, but may be able to contact a daughter. We will see.

I also reached out to Rod Powell on Instagram.
I hope I can find more pictures of this car to solidify my suspicion.

I’d like to talk with Andy Southard who wrote the book and knows more about the car. If he can identify the dash I think that would confirm it.

  29. Yep, the dash and some minor details f.e. the inner rearview mirror could give a clue. i like your story very much, you're doing good. keep on! Cheers, Carsten

If it is the same car you have struck gold as that car is fantastic looking. I would be excited if I was you! I think I would have to go Stude on the engine though.
