In reference to Drake; I bought my '40 coupe in '62 and after a few months was able to drive it . I spent a lot of spare time in junkyards looking for better parts for my car. I looked for running boards, wiper transmissions, standard grilles ( for a spare), spare fenders, and door handles that didn't droop. I remember that the S. American running board covers were mostly vinyl and cracked after a couple of years in the sun. Most of the time, mechanical parts were available in the smaller yards. I was thrilled when Bob Drake started making grilles. I regret not buying at least 2 or 3. I never found one in the junkyards that wasn't broken. As far as prices, I really don't care what I have to pay if I need it ( I do try to get it a little cheaper if I can). My "hot rods" are not investments; they never were. BTW the info and even parts I still need I find here and on the Fordbarn. Invaluable .
I generally build stuff that very few, if any, repop parts are available for. I guess it never occurred that I can’t build them if I can’t buy parts to bolt on.
I suppose the offshore quality thing that the content of this posting somehow shifted to could be debated many times over. I too fully support products that employee American workers & couldn't pretend to know all that goes on with those offshore labor markets & what is produced while respecting labor laws etc. However strongly feel we should not slight Tiawan as Mainland China increasingly threatens their very being when our own demand bigger profit margins while combating labor shortages. Hasn't always been a double-edged sword so to speak, but I'm certain not to be soon rectified......
On the bright side. I called and placed an order with Summit on Wednesday (Jan 5), received e-mail confirmation, noticed there was 2 of something that I only needed one of. I called Summit and was told order was picked and ready to ship. They could take item out, but would delay shipping or I could just return it. I opted for removing item before shipping as I was not in rush for parts. I also added 2 exhaust dump pipes to my order. Friday (Jan 7), I received my order, minus dump pipes which are coming from different location and should be here Monday. About the double item. Chevy control arm bushings are packed 2 in kit for upper and 4 in kit for lower. So when ordering I said I needed 2 of the upper and he must have thought I needed 2 of the other as well or I might have not been that clear about it. My point is, Summit took care of me and still got my order out the same day. Good customer service. And just trying to add some brightness to this thread. Ron
yep boys times they are a changin ! we had it good & didn't know it. i'm still building , but the enjoyment factor ain't there like it was , i just don't know how to golf or play cards.
Agreed.....I think out of this whole thread... this makes me the most heated.... The complete disrespect.
I had the exact opposite experience with Fusick. I mistakenly ordered 2 weather stripping kits and didn't realize it for a couple of days. I was kind of panicking as the kit was about $500. I phoned them and as soon as I started to tell them about the problem the guy I was talking to said they noticed that I had ordered 2 kits and assumed it was a mistake so had only shipped one. I was blown away by that kind of personal, common sense service. There are still some good old fashioned businesses out there!
