Bullets and baby moons...I think not!

Ok y'all why do you not see these anymore? I think these put the hot in rod. I'm ditching the idea for Torq Thrusts on my '37 in favor of the road less traveled. Dare to be different or is that traditional? Truly a '60's look if you ask me. Not sure who made 'em. They'll fit pretty much any plain steel wheel. I have some bases that are fluted to fit flush on factory style wheel center and some non-fluted ones that are for (I suppose) smoothies. I've had these for probably 30 years or so. Use to see them all the time at swap meets. My dad and I collected a few back in the 80's. He remembered them being of '60's vintage for sure. Just wished someone would repop 'em!

Oh and Jalopy Joker there are left-handed and right-hand knock offs. The LH side having left-handed thread and RH side with right-hand threads. The knock off screws onto a bracket thats bolted down with three of the five lug nuts with bracket being under cover/base.

I think they were going for that "European" look like Mercedes 300SL or on early Porsche's. These are Rudge wheels.

This will be a interesting thread to follow because I've had a set since the 70s. My brother had them on his 57 Chevy and when he sold the car, I asked him if I could have them so I got the spinners (3 bar), spinner towers, and tower covers. To the OP, use them. They are great on chrome reverse rims and look better than those bullets or baby moons.

I sold someone a set of those a few years ago, they were missing the lug mounts though. They seemed pretty popular in the early 60's when they first came out.

IMG_0152.JPG IMG_0262.JPG I've had a set on 35 wires since mid '80s. They were swap meet finds then. The 3 bar knockoffs are on spun covers on 77 Ford wheels now on track roadster.

Dechrome that's another wheel that you don't see anymore. Those aluminum Ford wheels I always brought to mind small window Halibrands. Kidney beans we always called 'em. Nice track car!

You can find the two bar knock off pictured here on eBay and other places around the web, but it looks cheesy and lacks left and right identification as the originals had. However that's just the knock off. No surround cap or anything. I suppose one could purchase the three bar knock off pictured and get the base which secures from behind the wheel, but there again it's just not as cool as the original!! Oh and here's an old Roth creation that appears to have the same center treatment. Not a very good picture though. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1407679568.682246.jpg

If I remember correctly...I think Cal Custom made both a 2 bar and 3 bar. I believe that Cragar made a 3 bar that was incorporated into their mag wheel center cap.

Hey Rusty Junk Ranch are those pics from Dallas? Sure looks like it. Very neat pics. Thanks for sharing them. I'll have to research Cal Custom. They made a bunch of very cool speed goodies!

There was a thread right here on Jalopy Journal. Yep Cal Custom. Used on Ed Roths Orbitron. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1407690063.304306.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1407690118.440135.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1407690134.392945.jpg

Kinda hard to see, but I had Cal Custom knockoffs on the chrome wheels on my 60 T-Bird in about 1962 or so.

Yeah those are the ones I sold a few years back. Had no use for them without the lugs mounts. I guess I could have fabbed something up.

Isn't the point of hot rods to increase performance by, among other things, reducing weight? I don't see the point of making a big deal out of adding fake knockoff hubs -- and to steel wheels at that.

  29. They look good with the chromies though.

abc123 the point is keeping the look of the early 60's alive as most people my age have moved on to billet 20" wheels which I feel look retarded. LONG LIVE REAL HOTRODS!!!!!!
