Buick had three straight 8 sizes. The 248 and 263 had the same size block. The valve cover length on those is about 30 3/4". The larger 320 engine had a 33 3/4" long valve cover. Don't know how that compares to the Chevy motors.
I guess I forgot about the different sizes... I think the small engine is about the same length as the Chevy 235.... I DO know the big engine weighs in at 800 lbs...yikes!
I'd be very surprised if a GM straight 6 is the same length as a GM straight eight. edit: Not sure if it's any help, but just measured my GMC 270. Head is 27.5 inches long. Buick 320. Head is 34.5 inches long.
I found some info that mentioned the '40 Buick Century had 5" added to the front end to accommodate the 320" Roadmaster engine. Assuming the 320 is 5" longer than a 248 the 248 would be about 29.5" long...2.5 inches longer than the GMC (which is probably a little longer than a Stovebolt). Lots of assumptions going on here....
