I've got a couple 215 Buick engines I've had for years. Had one in my 280Z but took it out and put it in the old A model truck. The problem I had was finding a trans that would work in the truck. The Z car was too long where the shifter was located. Fast forward to today, a buddy of mine is cleaning out his garage and gave me two 300 Buick engines. One is has been to the machine shop and is ready to build, the other for parts. They're the '64's with aluminum heads. My CRS has kicked in and I can't remember what will interchange between the 215, 300, and 340 anymore. Will the cams fit? Will a BOP 350 fit the 300? I thought it would, but how about the flexplate? I did a search but couldn't find an answer to these specific questions.
Camshaft, exhaust manifolds, distributor will interchange between the 215, 300, and 340. Aluminum 300 heads will bolt to a 215, but the intake will not. 300 intakes fit 300s only, and 340 intakes fit 340s only. 300 and 340 have the B-O-P pattern; the 215 does not.
Thanks Heathen, so the torque converter and flexplate from a 300 and 340 will interchange or is there a different balance? Do the high volume oil pump conversions for a V6 Buick work with the 300?
If you need a tranny adapter call D&D fabrications. The deal mainlt with the 215 stuff but the adapter will work on the 300. If you have a spare set of 300 heads and I carnk you would be willing to give up let me know. I also would be interested in the 215 heads if you put the 300 heads on it. Also of you use the 300 crank in a 215 with a .030 bore it is the makings of a stroker. There are other parts involved just can't remember at the moment.
A 300 is BOP bolt pattern, and 350, 400 200R4 ect. will bolt right up. As will BOP stick bell housings. the 300 340 flex plate is the same. 215 is different. V6 timing cover and oil pump bolts on, as will timing chain. 300, 340, 350, 400, and 455 use the same distributor, you need to do some grinding on the intake to use a big cap HEI. Delta will grind your cam any way you want. This one is mine, 305 cubes, Offy valve covers, factory 4 bl intake with a GM TBI, hybrid chevy/Buick small cap HEI. Cam is a Buick GN V6 grind on a V8 blank.
Thanks J Man, yea I got the adapter for the 215 to Z car from D&D about 20yrs. ago. Was glad to see they were still in business. I think I've got about 6 sets of 300 heads, not sure if they are all good tho. Not sure about 215's, I'll have to look through the garage and see how many I have left. You have an extra 300 aluminum 4 barrel intake to trade? Thanks for the info enjenjo, I wasn't sure about the balance on the dif. engines. Will the oil pans from the 340-350 fit a 300? I noticed that the 215 was different from it. Your engine looks great, where'd you find the valve covers?
Hello, I've been trying to do some research on the 215. I seen something about a 300 crank and rods in a 215 block will give an aluminum 300. Not sure about the pistons? The 300 is external balance while the 215 is internal. 300 heads on a 215 is a desirable thing, but I read that Volvo valves could be made to work in the 215 head for better flow. Can anyone comment about this?
If your factory intake manifold is a four barrel then the motor was a power pack car and had factory 11-1 compression. These little motors came in 64 skylarks and specials. They are real hard to get parts for, it took me three months to get a water pump and nine months to get the studs for the heads from ARP right they kept sending me what their "book" said was right. My old skylark was a power pack car and even though it was a 2 speed with a switch pitch it hauled ass. Also look for parts for a 4.6L Rover motor. G.M. sold the shit for these motors to Range Rover in the mid 60's and they made them until something like 2 years ago. So parts are eaiser to get over in england. Also alot of hot rods in england use rover motors.
