Broken stud on rear end

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by XxStrait-EdgexX, Oct 4, 2009.

  1. I just bought a dodge aspen rear end for my Wayfarer project and Once I got it home I realized that it has a broken stud. Whats the best way to fix this??? Do I have to replace the axel???

the stud will come out if you hit it with a hammer or punch from behind. sometimes you have to heat it up but be carefull of heating the axle too much and damaging the wheel seal

Wheel studs are pushed in from behind the axle flange- they have splines that cut into the hole--
worst case you pull the axle for access - use the lug nuts to pull the new stud in place - anti-seize the threads btw

Punch it out from the tire side into the brake area. Insert from behind the flange. Use the Flat side of the lug nut and a couple washer to pull it in.

Yep, bfh to knock it out, if there is enough sticking out you can usually hit it square and knock it out, punch if it takes a few more licks. I like to stack two or three washers that slip loosely over the new stud before putting the nut on with a bit of oil or grease on them to let them slip against each other. The nut goes on flat side to the washers.

You should be able to pick up the stud at about any parts house. This shows a rear stud for a 77 Aspen http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPag...tNumber=6411610&Description=Wheel+Bolt+-+Rear

Yes, that is it, and you most likely need a fair sized hammer.
