Aaa on the way. Found a shop willing to stay open until 8. Had a friend of a friend pick up the new bearings. The kids are drinking slurpees and shooting each other with water guns! Hopefully it's just bearings and not the axle bustes

As I already replied in your other thread asking for a C-clip, the '55 -'64 Chevy 10-bolts with the drop-out pumpkins don't use C-clips.

The axle bearing itself holds the axle in, it is press-fit to the axle and then the axle is slipped in and retained with the 4 bolts the also serve to hold the brake backing plates in place.

Find a bearing and a shop with a press. If the axle is toast, then......I hope you can find one of those too.

Glad to know it got fixed. The same thing happened to me with my Nomad . I'm driving down Carson in Long Beach and I look at my outside mirror and I see my tire sticking almost a foot out. Good thing my sister lived close by so I jacked it up and shoved the axle back in and drove real sloooooooooooooow till I got to her house. New bearing and I was back on the road.

Awesome, your family must be very patient. Dead on the roadside is something some families don't understand. Hug your kids. At least you got a handle on the problem and got help to fix it even if it took all day. The blessing is you are not on a strict time frame.
Heck it's something I haven't had to deal with in 35 yrs of hotrodding and zoopty thousand miles but it tests your patience.
Best of luck in your adventures.

FYI. glad your fixed.I should have responded earlier. If your axle came from the car in your avitar they are known for walking out out .old drag racer told me to tack, TACK, TACK weld the retaining ring to axle. remember just a tack weld not a full on welding job. about 3 spots will be fine! those cars have a side to side motion when they get a little were and tear on them.

Checking on you this morning to see how you made out. Good to see you are on the road again.

At least you were able to get to a city for help, and of course be able to get advice from the HAMB.

Hope the rest of your trip goes well.

  24. glad it was a simple fix and your good to go
