Good to hear thay are still at it.
Looking good do you have shop nick names yet

  2. No names yet. I have been kicking around the idea of coming up with a shop logo with their names or initials ... something ... for the name of the shop and having a couple of t shirts made. Maybe for Christmas or something.

Its been fun watching their enthusiasm, but I probably should watch out I don't go to overboard. Don't want to burn em out and scare em off =)

Really enjoying this thread - how is the truck coming along and did everyone have a good time at the Salt ?

  6. Ill post some more pics and get this updated this weekend. We are to the point where we are doing mostly wiring and small things, like putting in visors and fixing vents etc etc that don't really show that great in pics.

Basically they are only working on it two hours a week because of time limitations. And Ive been meaning to, but have been to lazy lol to work on it when they aren't around. Plus I have more fun when they are there.

Hopefully this thread will live when Ryan makes the changes to the board. Should be fun showing them doing upholstery and painting. The parts of this build that are off topic havent been showcased (front suspension), they were done before I got the truck anyway.

We are really trying to stay in the 65 era.

    Thanks for following along!

Are thoses boys in school now?
If so wounder if thay are talking shop with there buds.

  8. Those boys will have some great memories and just spending time with them is priceless.

  9. So here are some pics from the Bonneville trip. We arrived at sun up on Saturday morning. They boys didnt sleep well on the ride down, so they were really tired and kinda cranky lol. We actually didnt do a whole lot that day. Set up then looked around some. I think they may have been regretting the whole thing =(. We skipped the HAMB BBQ (I didnt want to share their grumpiness with the gang, your welcome lol) and went over and checked out all the rides at the Nugget. They did like that. Wyatts favorite ride was a very nice slightly chopped red 40. Dalton liked the polished Cobra best ... Oh well its a process lol.

Here are a few pics from day one.

They really liked the new car from the Old Crow shop

    Tuckered out (wussies lol)

And the obligatory Salt Man for first timers (on top of the cone)

  10. Day two was much much better. Got lots of sleep and had a good breakfast. Went back to re-set up our spot. I told em we were going to put a few miles in today =) They were actually pretty good about it.

We checked out a ton of rides. When I told people whose pits we were checking out that the boys were first timers on the salt they ALWAYS took a few minutes to ask if they were having fun. Showed them stuff about their cars, it was super cool. The boys told me it was so awesome how nice everyone was.

We got over to Mctims pit and they were thrashing some, but Tman took a few minutes to talk to them about the truck and even let them sit in it. Boy were they stoked. There was so much stuff on the truck they recognized. Im pretty sure since we are building a 62 it put Tims truck on the top of the list for favorite racer.

I have to thank people like you , as my father wasn't a part of my life growing up , and my Uncles and Grandfather filled in the place of teaching me , one uncle was into the motor and mechanical side ( told me how to rebuild my first motor as I had to do all the manual work ) , the other Uncle was bodywork showed me how to bang, cut and braze sheetmetal and use lead instead of bondo ( but he showed me how to cut mud ) , and grandpa taught me things to make working on them easier and on older stuff too, learned about generators and magneatos , all the way to multisparks ( early prestolight units ) ( he explained how electric systems worked as he was a Ham radio person ) and doing the mechanical things helped me monatarly thru college ( working on my own beater to working on classmates cars for cash) and later when I bought my semi . a little help and info helped me understand how systems worked later on. now that I am older I look ant my cousins and realize what they missed out on as they have to hire people to have work done on there vehicles ( only 1 out of 33 cousins is a car person ). and are often envious I can do it myself in my garage .

Keep up the good work .

  12. It was good to have you guys stop by!

  13. I really appreciate you taking the time. I know you guys were busy. But you really helped break the ice for them being less shy around the racers ...Thanks!

  14. Here are a couple of cars they really liked ... Im pretty sure we all do

Bomb Shell Betty looks better every year. If you are looking for a cool button up style shirt he has em. Nice change up from all the hot rod style t-shirts.

Was very cool to see this car out on the salt. Nice to see it gets driven and its not just a pretty face =)

We stopped to check out the Gyronaut X 1 restoration. Im sorry Ive forgotten the fellas name but he came over to talk to the boys about it and then asked if they would like to sit in it ... how cool is that???

  16. Thanks, Im very horrible with names. I need to write stuff down ... Id probably just lose the paper.

I showed the boys the video of the X-1 restoration on Vimeo, I think that made it even cooler yet for them.

Not sure how to imbed Vimeo, here is a link....

  17. Great pix! Lucky kids! I didn't get to sit in the "Gyronaut".

I wish I could have talk with you guys more, just had too much going on when you stopped.

  18. I showed em the video you posted going down the track, I had it full size and the speaker cranked. Shoulda seen them grinning ear to ear :D

I didnt get to sit in the Gyronaut either ... I think he looked at me and figured they would have to flip it upside down and shake it real hard to get me out of it ... I really need to lose a few pounds lol

  19. A few more pics just in case this one doesnt make it through the board changes ... at least Ill be able to look back on it =)

Wyatt was taking pics of the cars as they go from pits to starting line and back.

And then the number 77 car went out of control and came right at us and had a bunch of folks flying outta their chairs lol. When it was all over I asked Wyatt if he was Ok and he said, Yeah ... I took pictures of it as it went spinning past!

I strung em together for a quicky video.

Here it is at its apex. It went past us and spun around facing the wrong direction and came to a stop. Didnt hit anyone, or any other rides ... just a close call.

Good to see someone getting younger men involved in the hobby that could one day become a career, or even better an obsession. Not to change the subject, but I live in Walla Walla and my home looks very vey much like yours pictured... Is it a kelly home? Built around 1950?

Great thread, enjoy your time with them.

  22. The first pic in this thread the truck is in front of a buddies house. Not sure if this is the one you are talking about. I really dont know anything about it, but I can find out if you want me to.

The other pics are mostly in my shop. Its a pole style build done around five-ish years ago.

Glad you checked in on the thread =)

No need to ask buddy... Its almost exactly like the homes in my neighborhood... All built by a famous washington homebuilder i only know as kelly... He built thousands of homes in wa. Super duper heavy duty 2000 sq foot homes including basement... I had a unibody and i miss it very much. Should have never sold it.

This is one of the best threads in quite awhile..... looks like you have the boys hooked ... maybe future Bonneville racers......

  26. They were over today for a couple of hours. We are just dong the last of the little things to get it back on the road.

In the beginning I was going to be working on it myself when they weren't around. But I decided that I really wasn't in any big hurry to get it back on the road, so I just let them keep doing the work. I think its given them some real confidence.

This week though I'm going to do a few things to make sure its OK to run on the road next weekend. Attaching the wiring harness permanently along the points of the runs. Hooking up the aftermarket blinker and horn button ... Little things.

They are already bickering over who gets to push the start button first LOL. I told em I would have to flip a coin to see who gets the honors.

Hopefully in the next few weeks Ill have time to get it back to the tire shop to get the new wheels and tires installed. Nothing wrong with the new gauges and tach, but decided if Im going to keep the look 1965 I really need to get some old style Stewart Warner stuff.

As long as folks like checking in Ill keep posting progress pics. Ive shown this thread to a lot of family members and they really appreciate all the good words from everyone.

  27. Mark, you are tops, good job with those kids!

  28. Well we took a couple of steps forward and a lot of steps back. We took a few weeks off from working on the truck. I had some things to do and they had some stuff come up. It only gets worked on a couple of hours a week. I ended up not doing a thing to it on my own.

Had some difficulty with the wiring. I decided no push button starter and I wanted a stock switch and bezel which I didnt have. So I went online to Dennis Carpenters site and ordered up a ton of stuff. Switches, handles, seals, headliner etc etc.

You know when you build something unless you are one of those set in stone guys things change and it sets you back some. The boys are back at it now. They both have managed to cut themselves, though not badly. I told them it finally makes them one with the truck ... they liked that.

I have a bunch of pictures to post, not exciting stuff just the boys working away. I did take a couple of shots of it with the new wheels and tires on (yeah finally got around to that). Ill post those up and when I get a chance Ill post more of the kiddos.

My garage is narrow and I have a ton of crap in there besides the truck, hard to take a good side shot.
