When did chassis start being boxed . Were chassis actually starting to crack or fatigue with the need for increasing horse power.Just wondering if building a period correct hot rod what era would it have been does anyone know of some of the first cars that boxed chassis ,thanks
I've got a Hot Rod mag. that has "how to" pictures from 1953 or 54. So It was a few years before then for sure.
It all depends on what you want to build. If you have a stock model A frame on four stands, you can pick up one corner nearly a foot with flex. If you don't want a flexy flier, box it.
Boxed Chassis, or at least partially boxed from the factory seem to come in with IFS. I would need to look up each model to be sure. I know pick ups with straight axle fronts were not boxed. It seems I remember that straight axles suspensions were designed with some flex in the frame, thats why the frame rails are commonly found open and riveted. IFS on the other hand uses a more rigid frame with little give or flex..
