Thanks guys... I feel a bit out of place with my bone stock Pontiac so it's nice to see that you're enjoying it.

If you live in the twin cities I highly recommend Auto Electric in Bloomington. They do great work at a good price.

    Rock,

Car is still in pieces... They always seem to come apart a lot quicker than they do going back together. I have quite a bit of work to do to get hardware cleaned up, brackets cleaned, primed and painted, the engine exterior cleaned up and painted, etc... I was going to try and have it ready for the Back to the Fifties show in June, but my schedule just isn't going to allow it. I'll get it done eventually, and without being rushed.

C'mon, Chris. You're young. You can work every night on it when you're in town. :)

    Rock,
When I find snippets of time I head over to my pops place and scrape dirt and grease off the engine... It's slow, boring work. After about an hour I've had enough...

    Rock,
I did an initial cleaning with the pressure washer, but there is a lot of grime that just wouldn't come off.

Here are some pics from today...

I'm back at my pops place to work on the engine some more and standing next to me is this piece if awesomeness... To give you a sense of scale, the rear end is a 9 inch Ford. To control the speed dad is using a 3 speed out of a Maverick. All fabrication was done by dad. My dad rules...

Very cool, Chris. So, this is where you got your mechanical genes from!

What are all the plaques from?

    Rock,

Thanks! So yes, got most all of my mechanical genes from pops!

The plaques are most of my dad's patents. He worked for Thermo King for over 40 years and designed many of the internals for the semi truck refrigeration units. A few years ago he was named one of the top six inventors of the company.

Here we go, Rock... Tonight I'll be cleaning off the grime from the top end, tomorrow I begin prepping for paint, then Sunday I'll put the first coat on. I'm turning a corner on this "simple" project!

I am presently fighting a MRSA infection in my foot, so my activities are limited but I'm trying to finish up the rear suspension on my Buick. Have a great time doing your engine!

MMmmmboy, that Pontiac Straight 8! Beautiful rare car, worked on them when an apprentice...
When I first saw what you found, it reminded me of a distant time, my friend Bobby Souza bought a '53 Pontiac 2 dr hardtop...another well cared for (Calif.) car!
Bobby blew up the straight 8, I volunteered to help him tear it down and fix it.
TWO days later, he drove up to my Grandma's house in the Pontiac, opened the hood and lo and behold: It had a 324 Olds in it! Santa Clara Auto Wreckers (Don, always gave us kids great deals!) sold Bobby the near new engine for $35, and it was a BOLT IN! (Olds, Pontiac used the same frames, all the holes were there)
The fan was a foot away from the radiator, our friend Tony did the headpipes and dual exhaust system...he said he could make a shroud, and did that week.
I was so surprised the Olds slipped in there so easily. Like it was 'made for it'...well, it was. LOL
    Canoe shows miles of class.

    Mike,

    Great story, thanks for sharing!

This Bobby Souza... Would he happen to be a relative of AJ Souza?

    Rock,

Good luck with the rear end.

55, this is the Bill Hirsch paint, but I have my doubts about the correctness of the color. The remaining paint that was on my engine was a more noticeable blue-green. The Bill Hirsch paint is very dark. I know the original would have faded over the years, but this paint seems quite a bit off. With all of that said, I do like this color. It looks quite good against the Mayan Gold!

I had a 287 that still had some original paint under the grease, I would agree it should be lighter and more blue

  27. I pressured wash my motor in my 1950 Pontiac this weekend. Now I just want to pull it and do it right like you did. This thread is inspiring!

Thanks garage... Glad I could inspire you!

How did your engine clean up with the power washing? I had to put in at least 12 hours of wire brushing to get the caked on South Dakota dirt... It was like concrete!

  29. Well I thought great until I started to pull the front clip off. Now that the clip is almost off I can see all that I missed. I am really dreading cleaning all the grim off the frame.

    Garage,

I spent about 10 hours, maybe more, cleaning the grime off my engine. I spent almost the same amount of time cleaning the front suspension and frame. Grease and dirt was almost an inch thick in some areas.
