Thanks everyone for your coments. Im glad everyone is enjoying the build.

I got the passenger door top chopped. Now its on to the skin. I have to make a die to press out the main bead. Ill make sure to take pictures of the process on making the skin and getting in on the door.

  3. Stopped by the shop today and met Chris. Also looked at all neat things he has laying around. This car looks good on here, but it is a lot better in person!

He's got some great plans for it and I hope to see it completed soon.

I worked today on making the die that will press out the beads on the new skin. Got the die made (just needs a little tweaking). The test panel came out pretty nice, and it lines up really well.

I've used a bead roller before, this looks a bit different. Are you pressing/hammering the steel sheet as you pass it through the die as opposed to rolling?

The machine I am using to press the beads is called a Lennox or a (nibbler). The top die moves up and down extremely fast, and that motion against the bottom die stamps the shape into the sheet. You move the piece through the dies manually.

I got the skin rolled, and the bead pressed. Now its on to fitting and flipping the edge.

(Looking forward to the comments from everyone on how young I am) :)

Young is right. Do you know the name Craig Naff? He used to work for Boyd and do amazing metal shaping. He was young like you and had the eye and skills for shaping metal. You have a great future ahead of you. Good luck.

  10. damn you do look young... soooo when do you get your license, and your first chin hair???? lol all joking aside, damn fine work(like always)!!!!

Thanks for showing the process. Always good to see your outstanding work!!

  13. will you make another die for the bottom or just roll that one out?

does the nibbler leave a contour showing each impact or is it turn out pretty smooth?

    keep up the great work!!

I will flip all the edges using my beadroller.

The nibbler recripicates fast enough that the bead turns out really smooth. But if you move the panel too fast through the dies then it will leave marks.

How many hits per minute does the nibbler turn out?
Would be cool to see a video of the machine

That's a really cool die, Chris. It matches up really well.

    J. James, you need to bring that corpse of a 5w out west and re-mortgage the house so that Chris can knock that 'effer into shape! :D

To get my gaps the way I want I just hang the door, and then tape on pieces that give me the gap I want. Then I lay the skin on top and I can scribe following those pieces.

Then I use a die in the beadroller to flip the edge.

I got the skin all tacked in place and the edges flipped. It just needs final welding. Not to bad of a door compared to what I started with.

    On the skin:

    English wheel to create crown.
    Lennox nibbler to create beads.
    Beadroller to flip the edges.

    Welding on the car.

    Lincoln tig welder
    Hammer and dolly
    And a little metal magic.

Around 24 hours total time involved.

    Nothing to it :)
