Here’s a few photos my trek out to the salt on Sunday the 11th with my family this year at Speed Week. Due to rain delays we weren’t able to see any racing, but on the bright side all the cars & teams were all in the pits. We were only able to be on the salt for one day, as I had strategically fit Speed Week into our family road trip from Oregon out to Minnesota & back. - “But honey, it’s somewhat on the way & there is free camping!” @Lucky Burton @mctim64
This was my first time bringing the wife & kids out to Bonneville. Going from pit to pit with the kids we were repeatedly treated like VIPs & many times were asked if the kids wanted to sit in the cars. One of the cars being George Poteet’s “Blowfish”. While checking out the car, George asked the kids if they wanted to sit in it. He proceeded to sit down & chat with them like they were old pals & giving them animal cookies & drinks - little did they realize he is one of the fastest people on the salt! Once we had to be on our way (& after he offered us bologna sandwiches!) the kids gave him hugs. Speed Week with the family was definitely a unique experience that I’m sure will be repeated. I think the kids have been bitten by the salt bug. The wife is still up for debate.
Any families walking around with kids were always asked if it was OK with mom and dad if they wanted to sit in our roadster. A lot of takers and photos. I taught them how get in by putting them on the rear tire, sitting on the cage and stepping right on the seat to get in. Race cars were meant to get dirty and used. We do the same with our 1/2 mile dirt car...
Great photos It looks like you all had a great time. That might have been in your favor because a long day of watching racing there can get real boring for kids or a lot of adults who aren't seriously into the racing. I took my dad one year and he got bored pretty quick because of the time laps between runs but he did talk about going for the rest of his life. Thanks for sharing the photos and giving us a look that we normally wouldn't see.
Good for you. From the time our kids were born we took them everywhere. Often times inconvenient but you will be surprised what they remember as they get older. They are older now with kids of their own and often times talk about their adventures among things they first remembered.
We've long felt the same way. It was in no way easy taking the kids out there. We had to be willing to be more than flexible, but the reward and memories make it all well worth it.
Thanks! I've long talked to the kids about land speed racing and Bonneville since they were born. My two year old daughter routinely requests the Rodder's Journal for story time. So they at least had an idea as to what to expect and what Bonneville was. If anything, being that there was no racing, there was what seemed like miles and miles of pits to be seen. That was a bit taxing, walking that much in the sun for their little legs. I think splitting some time between the starting line, pits, and watching the cars race down the track would be a positive. Next year I'm already thinking about taking our vintage trailer (currently being restored) to give us some shade and a place for the kids to crash and hang out while out on the salt. Overall they're troopers and have been talking about it ever since we left.
Great photos, good memories, nice looking family. All in, not a bad way to spend some family time. Not bad at all
