I've been watching speed week on the net all week and listening to Slim on my smart phone and it looks like the cars go down course and then come back and get in line too make another pass. Back in the day your speed was determent by a two way average, one run going out and then a return run within one hour, so my question is. When did this change and why? Okay that's two questions.
The last 2 way records held on 2 days was 2002 they were with an impound like today. The last 3 runs.. qualifying one day and 2 ways the following morning stoped in the late 80’s. No overnight impound.
The 1 hour turnaround was an international (FIA/FIM) requirement for their record certification. SCTA Speedweek in '71&'72 used one course for both short and long timed runs for both qualifying and records. Slower cars/MC's went first in the morning record down runs, pulled well off to the side, and gathered down around the 4th - 5th mile while the fast rigs made their down runs. A sight and sound like no other as they approached, went by, and kept going through their final time miles wide open! A true appreciation of reliable high HP engine building for extended WOT time frames. Slower group returned first followed by the fast. No set times between the two group's runs either way, when the course was ready, one group finished then it was on to the next. IIRC, roughly about 200 total car and M/C entrants back then. Ed
