I just found out that I can have time off for speed week, so I'm looking for a place to stay. Wendover is full everywhere I have called, and both Salt Lake and Elko are about the same distance, so which is the better drive? I've only driven 80 west from SLC once and that was in the dark, but it seemed easy. Has anyone else done this drive several times in a row? Thanks, Rob

Last three years I have driven back and forth from SLC. I may do the same again. If you're in SLC, perhaps we can drive out together? I was thinking about camping at the bend... but I'm not decided yet.

If the distance is the same I'd just stay where ever is cheaper.

I think the road to SLC is better. There's mountain pass to go through and the freeway between Wells and Elko is a washboard.

you might find a room in Wells, which is about 60 miles.

I heard from a friend that goes every year to make reservations in SLC and then call when you get in to see if there are rooms available in WENDOVER. Sometimes race teams blow a motor first couple days and head home. That's when you might be able to scoop up a room. I stayed at the Rainbow Casino last year in Wendover and cannot imagine making the trip to SLC every night after being beat to death by the sun......and it was only like 78º on Friday there!!!

Yeah, if you're staying the week, I wouldn't drive back and forth. I just go the first weekend and have slacked on getting a room every year.

Stay @ the Motel 6 in Wells,NV the first weekend and then I can almost bet that you will find a room on Monday or Tuesday night in Bendover. DO NOT make a reservation for the Super 8 in Wells......it is a flea bag motel and they will charge your card for a 5 night stay & you will not get the money back/reversed......ask me how I know this. It is a bit of a drive, but not as expensive as Salt Lick.

Thanks for the tip on Wells-I didn't think of that. I will keep trying Wendover for cancellations and see if I can secure something in Wells. Even Tooele is 100 miles away (exit 99). Didn't find anything in Grantsville either.

Pack the tent and sleeping bags, plan on camping at the bend in the road at least one night and then do the wait for open rooms thing at the motel/hotel of your choice. It may take sitting close to the front desk for a couple of hours before you know but as a couple of the guys said, rooms seem to open up. You need to get there probably by 4 to get on the waiting list though.
Some guys blow the engine and go home early, some just don't make it there and some go home early for other reasons.

You can shower at the truck stop for a few bucks or find a buddy with a room who will let you use the shower (you owe him a drink or a brew though).
