Who can answer the question of weather you can leave your camp set-up at the Bend in the Road or doe it need to be picked up every day? I have heard both ways?? someone has to know thanks Look to see you there Thursday or Friday morning!
wind storms. be sure to stake it down and keep all zippers closed. i thought i would leave the window and door screens open to let it air out during the day. wind came along and closed the course. after waiting a couple hours, we called it a day. got back to the tent and found everything inside coated with a fine talc. as fine as the screen is in a tent, it still didn't keep anything out.
I believe he is talking about the weather taking it down the road. As far as being safe from other people, I've never known of any problems. Although I've never camped there I know a lot of my friends that have. So I would not leave a tent up.--TV
Wind. I was there in 2009 and it was like being on deck of an aircraft carrier. I'm going again this year and will tent camp at the bend. The fireworks every night are spectacular. Nobody touched anything while I was gone every day. I left the tent up and it was always there. The port-a-potties on the Salt got knocked over and moved with the wind. The ground is very smooth and hard. No ground cover needed under the tent. Bring a claw hammer to retrieve your tent pegs. They really get stuck good. And there's plenty left in the ground, you can get extra ones all over the place.
well, i'm sure that there have been items stolen from the bend, but i've never personally heard of any. i've camped at the bend 2 years and left everything set up. also the wind has never damaged my stuff; but it's always been staked well.
It means USE YOUR HEAD. It's a public area out in the middle of Nowhere, USA. Been there, done that! Good, honest hotrodders are not the only people with full access to this desolate area, especially during the day when MOST folks are five miles away where the action is on the salt. IF "bad guys" chance-upon the opportunity to pack-up some or all of your gear while your on the salt during your absence, chances are slim that anyone will be around to question ownership of your stuff. Unfortunately, there are a few crummy folks wanderin' around out there in this wonderful country, believe it or not. DD
One serious concern about the bend in the road, If it rains, it turns to the slickest mud I have ever seen. Make sure you are on high ground! I got stuck there once, I knew it was slippery so I started out slowly with my converted Grayhound bus and was doing prety good until I turned the sterring wheel. It bogged down and I had to wait about 5 hours until I could drive it out. The mud actually dried out in that time. I was watching a guy going across the mud with a front wheel drive car and the back wheels got larger and larger with stuck mud until it filled up the wheel wells and the tire just skidded across the mud. UNTIL, the front wheels pluged up the front wheel opening and stopped it dead. He then got out and walked to his truck, getting so much mud on he shoes that they looked like size 98!. After getting the mud off his feet, he went about 20' with the truck before it too got stuck.
PLEASE leave it cleaner than you found it and put the trash in the big bin we provide. Thanks, the clean up crew: aka "the stupid car"
You didn't happen to be one of the guys who rescued my little dome tent when the wind took it for a ride in 1998? One thing is to make sure you set up out of the traffic paths as some of the guys in that camp ground tend to get a bit wild the first weekend. I think you can still get a shower at the truck stop for a few bucks.
35ratbstr and I will be headed out of northern colorado thursday afternoon, anyone else rollin out there? So far our convoy consists of a 47 ford coupe, and a 62 fairlane. Has anyone ever had luck swingin into town on friday and tracking down a stray room?
I was able to get a room in 2009. It was pure luck. It was the very last room, and I needed to find another the next day. Just be ready to sleep at the bend if it doesnt work out. There is a KOA in wendover.
Yes, there are porta johns. Bring a flash light. If it is over cast it will be dark. If clear skys at night you can read a news paper by starlight. Nick
If you have room bring a bicycle. Once you get on the salt and park a bike is the easy way to get around especially in the very long pit area where you can't drive your car. Nick
I slept in the bed of my truck last year and the wind came up and made it miserable. Never again will I camp out like that. That fine dust gets into everything. I'll stick with an expensive hotel room like in years past. Worth it to be able to get cleaned up proper for the evening fun at the hotel parking lot.
How 'bout you guys that are camping out at the bend in the road and saving lots of money since it's free to stay there and the SCTA provides you with dumpsters and porta-johns do a kind deed in return and make a small donation to SAVE THE SALT? That'd be a greatly appreciated "thank you".
