I agree! ... calling them belly tankers has long been one of my many pet peeves (along with calling a '28-'31 Model A Coupe a "5 Window Coupe")

However ...

There is quite a lot of historical evidence that they were called "Belly Tankers" ... I'm thinking it was nothing more than the combination of the words "{Belly} Tank" & "Lakesters" (i.e., a portmanteau).
