    Here's how I build my 284cid flathead.

    Block is 1951 ford
Crank (4-1/8" stroke) and rods are Scat
    Ross pistons (3-5/16")
Camshaft is Schneider 270F, .395" lift, LSA 114 degrees (special order)
    1.6" Chevy valves
    Isky 185G springs
    Hollow body lifters
    McLeod aluminum flywheel
    Navarro heads 59A
    Navarro blower intake manifold
    H&H Flatheads steel mainbearing caps
Melling M15 Hi Vol oil pump
    4-71 blower
    Edelbrock 94 carbs
    Joe Hunt Magneto look-a-like distributor

I forget to take pictures of cylinder heads. I make compustion chambers 78cc to get compression ratio to 7.5

I smoothen all sharp edges and other clumps on lifter valley and in crank side.

I also drill holes where to put pin to keep lifter in it place to make valve lash adjustment.

Here is very good thread for porting job, you should read it! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=420484 I did mine almoust the same way.
My block was already reliefed (.125" deep), it only need little finishing.

I start to grind intake port like this way, so I can measure to not to go too deep and hit in the water pocket.

    Finished
    [IMG]

    Exhaust ports.

Valves are Ferrea 5000 Chevy 1.6" exhaust valves. I make that "curve" little tighter with lathe and polishing them. I haven't seen, but I think Manley Pro Flow valves are better and they didn't need any machine job to get the best flow. I let the intake valve's inner side and intake port's little rough, so fuel wouldn't get droplets in it. Exhaust side is like a mirror polished.

Schneider cams cam card says to use 90-100lbs valve seat pressure, so I aimed to 95lbs. Here's how I measure the spring assemby height to make correct shims with lathe.

    Shim.

    Valve assembled.

I also smoothen all sharp edges on new Scat crank. Ofcourse all lower end parts are balanced.

The fun part, putting all together. Remember to file pistonrings end cap to correct (I use .014") and check all bearing clearences and crank end play!

    Timing the camshaft.

I drill bigger holes so I can turn cam gear to get right timing what timing card say. Then I drill hole to pin to keep camgear in still. You can see the pin little seem up there. You should be very carefully to do not drill throught the camshaft.

    Ready to dyno!
That beehive oil filter didn't flow enough in full filtered oil system, I run without oil filter in this summer. I'am now working on new better filter.

Remember to re-torqued cylinderhead bolts about 3 times after hot/cold cycles before run in full throttle. I use Best Gasket's graphtite head gaskets and ARP head studs.

    306.2HP/5000rpm. Torque 471.6Nm (347.8Ft-Lbs)/3800rpm. Boost 6psi.
It would give little more HP's, but we didn't want to rev it any higher.

So how it works in the streets? Very good, it runs very smooth and almoust didn't sound like it have that much horsepowers. Radiator core is 15"x16"x3.5" aluminum Griffin and I use 16" electric fan and 180F thermostats in heads and it didn't have any overheating problems.

Progress will continue in this winter. I little fix the blower and I think boost will rise a little bit, we'll see that next spring in engine dyno what it causes.

How cum you have timing set from a 59a on there and not 8ba? They have opposite thrust directions.

Well noticed, I have been forgotten that already... I read it somewhere here in H.A.M.B. it's better to use 59a timing gears, because they push camshaft toward block, not in to the timing cover.

Outstanding work Dick:) The engine looks fantastic, as does the modell-A. Take a trip to Kjula next year!
As for the porting-guide, B&S made a bible for us Flathead guys:)
Oh, that spring shim, looks familiar:D!?

    Congratulations my friend!

    Bravo!

You have achieved what so many people say cannot be achieved and advise not to do.

You have inspired me to stick to my guns and go all the way!

Hmmm, I don't get spending all that time and money to have less HP than a SBC! LMAO! How many times have you heard that? Lol!

VERY nice build on the flatty- the engine looks like a piece of art, and the car is amazing too! You did an excellant job, and I'd love to hear more!

Very cool build. I'm doing a similar motor (without the blower) for my Lakester. I must say, yours is much nicer. Wayno

Hah, I can't even imagine how many times you have heard this...

Actually I don't have much of experience to build engines, I only have been rebuilding couple of before this and this is my first engine where I try to get lot of horse powers. I'm glad that I reached my dream.
I've been searching all flathead building threads at hamb, and have been read both of Joe Abbin's blown flathead books. I hope this thread will help even a little some other flathead lover too.
