Yup. I know all about that. I have been collecting parts as well as have been busy making all the stuff I can for my Gasser project. I have been watching craigslist and making deals with my Dad's buddies or my father in-law for as many old school parts as I can. It is really part of the experience for sure. This should be a fun car for you. Nice looking shop you have access to as well. It really helps to have the tooling and machines available to make as much as possible. It makes for a much cooler car to see it was not built by puking a catalog of parts to it. Keep it up.

Got started on my wheelie bars tonight. I got the wheels from mcmastercar. I was planning on running some chrome wheelie bar I bought off Craig's list, but they always looked wrong on the car. I was going to start building one that mount off the back of the frame. Then I saw the ones Quain was building on the studebaker and I know those would serve both form and function.

I finished welding up the wheelie bar wheel brackets and drilled some holes. Hopefully this week I'll get me surge tank parts back from the water jet. Also Saturday my roll cage should be getting certified.

Hope those phenolic wheels hold up for you, probably won't use them too hard anyway, I guess.

I got a brand new perfectly good moon breather in the mail today so I decided to cut it up. I took some time to mill the angle off the bottom but when I put it on it was ksy high and looked stupid.
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1427857882.214312.jpg
So I took the risk of ruining a perfectly good breather and cut it way down
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1427857924.665321.jpg
And I couldn't be happier with how it looks.
Only need a few more things to finish the tank.

Happy Easter. Got some parts back for the surge tank. These are chucks of aluminum I had cut on a water jet. Then I drilled the holes on the mill.

Next I worked with a new material modeling clay and stuck the aluminum parts to the tank so I could scribe the contour
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1428251213.566890.jpg
Then I scribe he contour on the part
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1428251229.949447.jpg
Here it is roughly shaped in and on the tank.
I still have to do the other side and a little more shaping.

  17. the tank is cool. the original altered wheel base mopars used a similar set up after going to fuel injection. after they got rid of the stock tank these went away also as there was no need for them. i think your vent may slosh fuel out of it. i ran a number 8 fitting with a alum tube. it came up and formed a loop then ran down below the tank. i have also seen the vents that go in the cap. these vents are tip valves. with the vent in the pic if the car should crash and go upside down there is now way to stop the fuel from running out. i would think its not a legal vent. skin grafts are painful and expensive.

    Thanks.
I was thinking the same about the vent I will have foam but I know that won't stop fuel from spilling out. As far as the sloshing goes I'm only going to drill a few small holes like you would breathers on a valve cover. If this doesn't work I can always block it off with a plate under the breather cap and make a different breather.

  19. it still needs some way to vent and keep the fuel contained in the event of a crash. a tip valve will do. i may have one in the shop if you need it. its yours if it will keep you safe.

Well got the car back from getting the roll cage tonight. I'm excited with how it came out. It's very clean and you can barely tell that there is a cage in there. He still owes me a dash bar and rocker bars. I just had him bend it and tack it so the body will still need to be lifted so I can weld a few spots. Here are some pictures.

Got a little time in tonight. I already had the radiator mount made, but recently got some dimple dies. I couldn't resist.

Started working on boxing the rear part of the frame

The hole spacing looks weird because I'm going to mount a removable push bar off of this so I can put the bumper back on.

Got the rear boxing plate tacked in today. Also drilled holes for the main push bar tube. I made the Push bar so it's removable. It's a 1-1/8 .058 wall. Then the push bar will be 1". I'm looking forward to getting the push bar made soon.

  29. Aha! So that's a surge tank. ;) I thought it had something to do with Collin Powell and the M1A1.
