Projects Big daddy's 1960 El Camino

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Lloyd's paint & glass, Nov 18, 2020.

  1. Oh I work on cars every damn day that I'm not at the firehouse, just not my own! Lol....

  2. Fly your big ass into Louisville and hit I65 south!! :D

  3. Changing a few things on the ol heap. And one of the tasks at hand is my gas tank. I have a 10 gallon fuel cell, works fine, but 10 gallons of gas is limiting on the interstate. I was thinking about buying a mid 60's mustang tank, 16 gallon, easy to mount, but of course i will have to change my gas gauge. I am seeing 19 gallon aluminum fuel cells on Amazon that are about $50 less than the tank. What would you guys do? 20230320_160804.jpg

Less money is not always the way to go. $50 isn't much. I would choose which fits best .
I have run a lot of stock reproduction tanks and only one aluminum one.
Which one fits best? I'm guessing the aluminum one. Will it be in the way? The gauge will be better though . gm to gm.

Oh hell I forgot it's a race car. moon spun tank would be my choice. :D

  6. Yeah the $50 doesn't really steer me, not having to change the gauge is a plus though. I'm just at a crossroad and don't really have a reason to choose a path lol

First thing that comes to my mind on the gas tank choice is a two piece stamping in steel vs. a lot more in aluminum and a lot of TIG welding.

  8. Lloyd, how are you going to mount it? Cut it into the bed like the mustang trunk floor? Or in the bed? My aluminum 20 gallon fuel cell had an incorrect sender, I ordered one that was a universal 0 - 09 Ohm unit compatible with my stock gauge.
*edit - just looked up a stock replacement. Eek! $600

What kind of fuel are they selling around your parts?

  10. The fuel cell that's in the car is mounted to a subframe that i built at the rear of the frame, but if I use the mustang tank I'll build a new setup that basically mounts it just like a factory mustang setup. My current sender is 0-90ohms and the bigger cells come with a 0-90. I don't know what the mustang uses.

  11. As far as ethanol?

Yes, if that aluminum is not anodized the ethanol will cause corrosion.

  13. I never pay attention, I just put 93 in it, but I'll look. That foam in the cell doesn't seem to be affected yet but I'm not sure

  14. I went to Kentucky mustang and got the kit. 3/8" fuel line on the sender. I needed to change the gas gauge anyway, doesn't match the others lol

Pretty sure I have a black faced fuel gauge from a Peterbilt, if I can find one of the tank sending units I’ll ohm it out and you can compare to your sending unit and see if the gauge is compatible.

  26. I got these sweet moon gauges from scotty t, need to see if they sell a matching gas gauge, but anything will work

  27. Yeah that's the monster :D

You should have gotten a Mustang "style" tank from Tanks Inc. They have an aftermarket type sending unit mount so you can use the appropriate sender to your gauge. I have one in my Henry J.

  29. The main reason I went this direction is Kentucky mustang is just up the road from the firehouse i work in, it's easy to walk into the showroom and walk out with your parts lol. If only I was a mustang guy I'd be able to get parts easy
